What is happening at NCE?
Book Fair
NCE has a book fair coming up (preview days are January 19th-22nd and purchase days are January 23rd-26th)!
Participation in the book fair is voluntary, and parents must opt-in students in order for them to purchase books and other items included in the book fair. Please note: Students are not required to attend or purchase books/items from the book fair. The book fair may also include books available for purchase; however, the books are not currently within the Katy ISD library circulation inventory.
Please see the attachment for more information (a paper copy is also being sent home with your child).
If your child will participate in the upcoming Nottingham Country Elementary book fair, please ensure your child returns the attached permission form to their homeroom/ELA teacher.
NCE's LIMELIGHT RUN FUNDRAISING
Please help support NCE's LIMELIGHT Run team as we raise money for the Katy ISD Education Foundation (funds teacher grants). Here are a few ways to help:
1. We are selling "passes" to students for $5 per sheet. The sheet includes things like a no shoes pass, a hat pass, a stuffed animal pass, a PJ pass, etc. These will be sold beginning now through Friday, 2/16, and can be purchased in the front office.
2. For $1 per day, students may participate in our Spirit Week 1/29-2/2. They may turn their money in to their homeroom teacher each day that they participate, or you can send in $5 on Monday 1/29 to cover the whole week.

NCE's International Day
2024 NCE International Day Sign Up On Friday, February16th NCE will have our International Day celebration where all students rotate through grade level and parent supported displays highlighting countries from around the world. We need your help in making our Annual International Day a huge success! Please help share your country’s heritage/experience with our students as they come and explore the world during the school day. We have such a diverse community, so let’s come together and show them our vast world! You can create a table display of your own. Grab a friend or two and set up a table. If you would like to share items like a costume, trinket, dance, song, performers that would be wonderful. You are also invited to possibly bring a bite size snack/candy for an all-around experience that represents your country (800-850 bite size pieces with the ingredients listed). We are encouraging everyone to dress in their country’s cultural attire that day. The date is Friday, February 16th, and this is an all-day event. (If you work with a friend, you can split your time as you need). You can arrive for set-up at 7:30 and the event will end around 3:00. You will need to park across the street at Kingsland Baptist Church. Please note that an email will be sent to all volunteers that have signed up for the same country. If you have any questions, please reach out to VaRisha Osby at VarishaLOsby@katyisd.org or Josefina Wells at josefinawells@katyisd.org.

What are we learning?
Math
This week in math we learned how to add and subtract Mixed numbers. We also discussed how to borrow from a whole number if we cannot subtract two fractions. We finished this week out with a Test Review. Our test is next week on Monday, so please have your child complete the review over the weekend if they did not finish in class. I have posted the answer key in Canvas, or you can use the link below!
Science
This week, students began investigating the Earth's rotation and how it causes patterns such as day and night. A common misconception is that the Sun moves across the sky. However, the Sun "appears" to move causing shadows throughout the day. It takes approximately 24 hours for the Earth to complete one full rotation on its axis. With a short week, students will continue with this concept part of next week.
RLA
This week we read a realistic fiction story, The Good Garden. Students worked on understanding how the setting plays a role in what is happening in the story. In addition we talked about the different uses of figurative language that the author might use within a text.
In writing, students worked on finalizing their extended constructed response essay.
HMH Parent Portal
Please refer to the picture and link below for the new curriculum parent portal.
Social Studies
This week in Social Studies students completed a 4 square project over figures that had a significant impact on Westward Expansion. Students had to share what each figure's specific role was during the exploration of the Louisiana territory as well as their lasting impact.
