RESCHEDULED: 5th Grade Snowshoeing

Look for Permission Slips in Backpacks this afternoon!

This Thursday, March 10, Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Hartman will be taking their students snowshoeing at Mesa Lakes on the Grand Mesa with volunteers from our local Kiwanis Club and Fire Protection District. This has been a longstanding tradition at BUE. We were so disappointed this group could not go last year and are excited to have the approval to make the trip up to them this year!

Students will be provided snowshoes for the trip and lunch will also be provided for all students. This will be an all day trip.

What you child will need for this trip:

  • Waterproof snow boots

  • Snow pants

  • Warm gloves (Waterproof gloves strongly suggested)

  • A hat and scarf

  • A warm winter jacket

  • A water bottle and snacks

  • Backpack

Lunch at Mesa Lakes Lodge is generously provided for all students by Garfield 16.

If your child is missing any winter clothing essentials, please reach out to your child's teacher or our office and we can try to help with coats, pants, boots, gloves, etc. (970) 285-5703.

We will be leaving school first thing in the morning, a little before 9:00 am. It is very important that your student gets to school on time.

Please work with your child's teacher to reschedule SLCs if you were unable to attend

Dear families,

We know that sometimes things come up that are unexpected. Some families were unable to make their scheduled Student Led Conference time. Teachers have been/are currently reaching out to make sure every student has the opportunity to present their learning in a Student Led Conference. Please reschedule this as soon as possible!!

Kiss and Go Zones

Drop Off and Pick Up during Winter Weather:

  • Please drop students off using our Kiss and Go Lanes in front of BUE. For more information on Parking Lots, Drop Off and Parking Lot Safety please click here: Student Safety in the BUE Parking Lots
  • Please plan on it taking longer than normal to drop students off due to slick roads and parking lots.
  • There have been complaints about the Kiss and Go Zone backing up.

We also want to remind parents that the parking lot is available to use instead of the Kiss and Go. You do not need to walk your student into the school if you use the parking lot. Many parents turn into the parking lot to avoid the congested traffic in the Kiss and Go lanes and drop their students off in the parking lot area. Students are assisted by Crossing Guards as they cross the Kiss and Go Lanes.

Want to make a little extra money?

Dear Parents,

Colorado has been experiencing a teacher shortage since 2010. Substitute teachers are also very limited.

Substituting is a great fit for retirees, college students, part-time workers, stay-at home parents, and those with flexible schedules.

Here are some quick facts:

  • Substitute teaching is very rewarding. You get to work with great kids, see how our school works, and get a better understanding of what our students are learning and why.
  • It provides you the opportunity to set your own schedule and have a great amount of flexibility. It can fit in your schedule as it works best for you and you get to determine the days you work. You can even use it to supplement another job.
  • You can easily sub as many or as few days a week as you would like. You can earn a steady paycheck or several hundred dollars here or there.
  • You will make a difference in students’ lives and in our school.
  • You’ll have fun! Substitute teaching is really an adventure. The variety found in the day, fast pace, and meeting new colleagues and students, are all a recipe for an exciting day.

  • Certified substitute teachers make $130 / day in Garfield 16. (this is subbing for a teacher)
  • Classified substitute teachers make $12.32 / hours in Garfield 16. (this is subbing for a paraprofessional, custodian, food service, etc).

If you do a little math, subbing for a teacher can really add up:

  • Working only 2 days a week could earn you over $1000/month ($130x2 = $260 x 4 weeks a month = $1060).

Here is a link to CDE's website on how to apply to become a substitute teacher. LINK

Most people will want to apply for a 1 year authorization.
There are 3 steps:
