College Corner: Rollins College
Mrs. Casey recently visited Rollins College: Established in 1885, it is the oldest liberal arts college in Florida. There are nearly 2600 undergraduate students on the campus, which sits just outside of Orlando in scenic Winter Park. With the average class size at 17, students have close relationships with faculty and great opportunities for research with professors. Nearly 80% of students study abroad at some point during their Rollins experience and students can choose from over 60 undergraduate programs of study while on campus. The unique Social Entrepreneurship Major highlights the commitment Rollins students and faculty have to engaging with and giving back to the greater Orlando community. 23 NCAA Division 2 teams and over 100 student-led organizations result in plenty of opportunities for involvement and school pride! There are currently 4 La Salle students attending Rollins College.

Alumni Spotlight
Jadine A. Ferri '03
In January of 2020, I was awarded the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association’s 2019 Community Policing Award. I began working for the Coventry Police Department in March of 2008. While working the midnight shift, I was able return to La Salle Academy and start a life-long dream of coaching. After a visit to the Academy, athletic director Ted Quigley asked if I’d like to be the head coach of the girls' volleyball program, and without hesitation, I said "yes!" Since that day, I spend the majority of my days at work or at La Salle coaching girls' and boys volleyball, and competitive cheer. I was blessed to have coached the 2008 RIIL girls volleyball state champions, and the 2012, 2017 and 2018 RIIL cheerleading state champions. Though every season wasn’t a championship season, I am grateful that each season every student/athlete taught me a lesson.
I have been a believer that it’s not just about the sport you coach or where you work, it is about the impact you make on a community. It all clicked one day when I realized that I could make a positive influence not just at La Salle, but I could bring a new light to police officers in our town. I started getting involved in Community Policing and visiting the elementary schools more often. My coworker and I brought back McGruff and we bring him around the elementary schools to talk about Halloween safety every year. We’ve dressed up at our local Trunk or Treats and handed out candy, and participated in “hot chocolate with a cop” during the Christmas celebration. We host community outreach programs such as “Coffee with a Cop” which is a national event where the community and police officers come together to chat. We also run a “Fill a Cruiser” event to benefit Toys for Tots and we also raise money for our local “Tis the Season” adopt a family every Christmas. In addition, we have dodge ball tournaments and charity basketball games to collect canned goods for the local food bank. As time goes on, the event list grows and the community becomes more familiar with the officers and see us in a positive light.
After almost 12 years in the field, I have seen a shift in how people view police officers and I am glad to be part of this change. I graduated from La Salle in 2003 where I played soccer, cheer leading and volleyball. Many of the things I learned as a student/athlete were instilled in me by my coaches and teachers, and I carry those lessons with me today. The sense of community and family has been in my blood since the moment I arrived. I was very lucky to be able to coach with my friends and other La Salle alumni and also work with police officers who share a vision with me. I truly hope to bring what I’ve learned at La Salle to the community I work in.
