From the Director's Desk:
Welcome!
As we continue on with the 22-23 school year, I want to give a warm welcome to all our families and students. Whether you are a new family joining us for the first time or a returning family, I trust you have enjoyed summer and now fall! As we head into winter and the start of 2nd quarter, I want to encourage you to find those unique learning opportunities that winter affords. Additionally, I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community here at Raven.
At Raven, our goal is to put you and your child’s best interests first. Our dedicated staff are here to support, mentor, and encourage you in your homeschooling efforts. We want you and your child(ren) to have the best homeschooling experience and education possible at every stage of your homeschooling journey.
All signs point to another incredible and productive homeschooling year. Our skilled and devoted staff team has been working diligently to enroll new families, order needed materials and connect families with local homeschooling resources. If you are in need of instructional support or materials, please be sure to reach out to your advisory teacher.
There will be a wide array of activities hosted by each Raven office this year. Be sure to ask and see what you and your family might want to participate in. This is a great way for your children to connect with others and for you as parents to build your network with other homeschooling parents.
I would also like to extend a personal invitation to attend our Raven-wide Parent Advisory Council meetings. The next one will be October 26th at 2:30 pm. We do record these and livestream them on Facebook for those that have other commitments during this time. We also welcome your input and feedback via the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdG49-9nmaCCz5WSDOoqMPjb-D8zk9_yfS0etjIR6MPZuJ3zg/viewform?usp=sf_link
I wish you all an exciting, enjoyable and successful year ahead.
We appreciate you choosing Raven!

New Staff Introductions:
Vicky Charlie - Assistant Director
My name is Vicky Charlie, the new Assistant Director for Raven Homeschool at the Fairbanks office, I am very excited to serve you and your families!
I am a life-long Alaskan who enjoys hunting trips with my husband, berry picking, family dinners and crafting. I was raised in Galena, Alaska, then moved to Fairbanks to attend UAF where I obtained my bachelor's degree in education. I have been working in education for 25 years, 23 of those years with Yukon-Koyukuk School District at Minto School where I was a teacher and most recently the principal for 16 years. With the support of YKSD I was able to obtain my masters degree in 2012. My husband and I raised our three children in Minto where we were able to practice many of our cultural traditions.
My goal at Raven Homeschool is to provide the best educational opportunity for your child that I can! I am new to the job, but not new to education. I look forward to meeting all of you, hopefully in person at some point! Please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to serve your needs.
Sincerely,
Vicky Charlie
Brandy Henderson - Assistant Principal
Hello! My name is Brandy Henderson and I am so excited to be working with Raven Families as the Assistant Principal. I have already had the privilege of working with some of you as an advisory teacher last year and am looking forward to working with all of you as a support in your educational journey. I cannot wait to see all the learning that will happen this year.
I come to Raven with a wealth of experience in education. I taught for over 20 years, first in Washington state and then in Alaska. My educational background is in Elementary Education, Special Education, and Educational Leadership. I also have a Masters in Reading. My husband and I love living in Alaska and have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren. We also have two very spoiled dogs and love getting outside with them. I look forward to getting to know families and working with everyone.
Counselor's Corner:
Meet Your Counseling Team:
Megan Rosendall
Raven Homeschool Graduation Coach - Anchorage, Eagle River & Wasilla offices
I was born and raised in Michigan, where I developed a love for outdoor activities, including fishing, skiing, camping, biking (bicycles and motorcycles), and almost anything involving water. Before going into education, I was a director with the YMCA in Michigan and Ohio. I joined Raven in August of 2019 after spending 12 years working in the village schools for LKSD. My last 7 years with LKSD were spent as the site administrator (principal) at Kwigillingok School, a K-12 school. I truly loved my students and working with them, but felt a need to be closer to family and friends so I moved into Anchorage in 2019 and joined Raven Homeschool. I have loved learning about homeschooling and what an awesome opportunity it can be.

How Can We Help?
Over the years we've learned that students and families who begin working with their school counselors in 8th or 9th grade graduate high school far more prepared for the future than students who don't. Students with early counselor support have a better grasp on what they want to do post high school and a plan on how to use their diplomas to get there.
Success in high school and beyond is a team effort and, as homeschoolers, that effort continues year-round. As your counselors, we are right there with you. We are available 12 months a year to meet, plan, and help you achieve all your goals.
Contact us to discuss all post-secondary opportunities including military (active, guard and reserve) enlistment, officer programs, union apprenticeships, immediate employment, and/or college and university admissions as well as everyone's favorite, scholarships and financial aid.
Attention All Seniors (and Graduating Juniors)
Your final year of high school can become very busy. There are many, many deadlines. There are deadlines for applying to college or trade schools, deadlines for scholarships and financial aid, and registering for tests. AND there are deadlines for having your schoolwork done and notifying your advisory teacher of your intent for graduation (which includes a whole other list of deadlines).
It is important that you pay attention to any Smores you receive. Watch for Seniors: Things You Need to Know. These informational Smores will remind you of deadlines, provide you with after high school opportunities, and will often include workshops targeted just for seniors and their parents.
Seniors: Things You Need to Know
FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid
It is important that you stay in contact with your advisory teacher. Make sure you are on track with your classes (May 1st is the deadline to participate in graduation ceremonies) and reach out to your teacher if you start to struggle. They will also be sending and collecting information about all seniors for graduation (whether or not you participate in the graduation ceremony).

Anchorage Office:
To say we started off the 22-23 school year with a bang would be an understatement! We’ve been a flurry of workshops, activities, meetings, field trips and more! We love seeing students and families back in our office and are looking forward to hosting more workshops throughout the year! We brought back some of our favorite workshops from years prior, but we’ve also introduced a handful of new activities; read below for some updates on our awesome clubs.
Back-to-School Party:
We had about 100 participants for our Back-to-School party in August! Students and parents enjoyed an ice cream bar, face-painting, craft activities, a “Find a Friend” game, a gnome scavenger hunt and ended the day ice skating downstairs.
Health Club:
Students are meeting with Erika once a week to learn about safety, being drug/alcohol free, making good choices, being respectful, using empathy and more!
Writing Club:
Our Writing Club began in October! Throughout the year students will learn about poetry, figurative language, how to write a personal narrative, nonfiction stories and so much more!
Math Club:
Math Club started in September in the Anchorage office! We meet weekly so students can play math games and also get help in math. We have three teachers that work together to plan games and lessons. All students are welcome to come to Math Club for math support and fun!
FLL & Jr. FLL:
We are building and coding! FLL and Jr. FLL is going strong! Our FLL team has built their missions and their robots and are beginning to learn how to code to successfully complete those missions. Jr. FLL teams are building edifices with gears, motors, and Technic blocks. They have built a crane, a merry-go-round, a race car, and a robotic dog. We are all having fun and making new friends!
Monthly Art Club:
Monthly Art Club is back and more popular than ever! We even had to add an additional session to our October date! In September Stephanie taught students how to create paintings of trees in each season using acrylic paint. Our October workshop will teach students how to create cat silhouettes against giant harvest moons. This year, we’ve worked with local businesses to display the artwork so make sure to keep an eye out for it while you’re out and about!
Reader’s Theater
In Reader’s Theater, we’ve tried out about a dozen different scripts. Some were informational - did you know that Crayola wraps their crayons in two layers of paper to prevent crayons from breaking? Some were humorous - we heard the Three Little Pigs story from the Big Bad Wolf’s perspective (did you know he was framed?!). We got to pretend to be mice, dinosaurs, and monsters! We did all this while practicing our reading fluency!
Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books begins! We had our initial meeting and will continue to have practice sessions where we’ll learn about the authors, play games & get ready for the state battle in February 2023.
Community Involvement Club
For our Community Involvement Club, the Red Cross representative, Paton Stotts, shared what they do, how to be involved, & how they have helped Alaskans recover from Typhoon Merbok.
The Community Involvement Club also heard virtually from SPCA with Tara McCoy, how we can support our furry friends in our community. We had a virtual tour & got to meet some of the furry residents.
These are just a few of the amazing workshops and activities we host each month! Make sure to keep an eye out for emails about more opportunities for your student to participate in! Contact our office if you have any questions or need help signing up for any activities.

Delta Office:
It’s difficult to believe the 1st quarter of the 22-23 school year is ending soon! It has been a whirlwind start. We had hikes, crafts, field trips and more all while getting into the rhythm of the new school year.
We ended 21-22 with a Father’s Day Craft and a Picnic at the Pull Out where we learned about the geography and history of our area.
July was mostly filled with ILP meetings and enrolling new students. We did take a break and hiked the new River Walk Trail. What an amazing view across the Delta River!
August saw us celebrating our Back to Homeschool event with great food, good company, and fun games! We had two hikes scheduled: the Liewer Trail and a return to the River Walk Trail for those who missed it in July. Danielle brought in her Usborne books for a final sale. There were still lots of great books to buy! Families that attended the Open House on August 30th completed a scavenger hunt that helped them learn where to find what they need in the office. Students learned what areas they are not to go into without permission and where they are free to be in the office.
Terrific Tuesdays returned in September with the Puffins bringing their cardboard box cars in to watch the movie Cars and eat popcorn in the Raven Drive In Movie Theater. Wolves began to learn about music and play a bit with BoomWhackers. Hawks experimented with the effect of salt on watercolors. Owls were able to meet with our Academic Counselor, Ryan Tilbury. We also had a craft day to make cards to send to our favorite grandparents.
We had one last hike in September. A few brave souls returned to the Liewer Trail even though it was a damp, chilly day. The Dorshorst’s kindly invited students and families to tour their Alaska Museum and showed everyone how honey goes from the comb to the jar. Students had a great time looking at the old-time vehicles and buildings that showed how sturdy pioneers lived and worked in the new frontier. Everyone went home with a jar of honey, too!
October began with Heidi and Ryan driving to Tok to visit our families there. It was great to meet everyone and get to know you better. On October 11th, our students and families were able to ride a school bus to Ft Greely and then were treated to a tour of the fire station and equipment. Thank you, Ft Greely Fire personnel! Lifetouch visited and took student and family photos on Wednesday, October 12th.

Eagle River Office:
The first quarter in the Eagle River office has flown by! We have kept our families busy with all our usual clubs, like Recess Club, Outdoor Club, Book Club for Kids, Game Group, and Cooking Club. But we’ve also added some new ones that are super popular! Book Club for parents, History Club, and the biggest hit of all…..Lego League! We have three teams that are at maximum capacity and all of them are working hard each week and are looking forward to the competition in December.
We have a full year of field trips planned, but we started the year with a huge one! Our families, along with families from the Anchorage office, headed to Whittier for a wildlife cruise. It was a beautiful day on the water and everyone would like to see this offered again. The field trips that are planned for the rest of the year include the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, the planetarium at UAA, four plays at the PAC, the Alaska Zoo, an overnight trip to the SeaLife Center, and several more!
Art classes have come back to our office with a new, fantastic instructor. Stephanie, who works in the Anchorage office, and who also happens to be an incredible artist, has generously agreed to host five painting days (2 sessions each day) throughout the year. All the spots for the whole year filled up in just a few days! We’ve had one class so far where the kids painted beautiful trees for each season. They will be on display in the lobby at Anchorage Community Theater during their Halloween performances; after that they’ll go home with their little artists.
One group in our office that deserves recognition is our amazing Parent Advisory Council (PAC). Our PAC is open to ALL parents, but we do have a small group that regularly attends and is devoted to making our office the best it can be - their input about activities, clubs, parties, and field trips, is invaluable and we truly appreciate their support and feedback.
Welcome, Bridget Henry!
Our office welcomed a new (part time) teacher and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Bridget is actually a teacher in the Wasilla office and when asked if she would split her time between that office and ours, she graciously accepted! She has fit in perfectly since day one, connecting easily with our families and with staff!
Student Spotlight - Charlee L.
Charlee L., a student with the Raven office since 2020, recently attended our back-to-school open house. While there, she filled out a ticket for a door prize and ended up winning the biggest prize - a kids’ chess game! About a week after taking it home, Charlee’s mom called to tell us how much she loved it, that she had been playing regularly, and was getting quite good at it! We are thrilled that a simple prize has instilled a (hopefully) life-long love of such a classic game.
Raven Wildlife Cruise:
The Eagle River office kicked off the new school year with a wildlife cruise out of Whittier. We had a National Park Ranger on board who helped all the students get their Junior Park Ranger badges. To get to Whittier, we drove through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest (2.5 miles) highway tunnel in North America. The cruise showed us a wide variety of animals and calving glaciers! The students even got some glacial ice to try. Thank you to our friends in the Anchorage office who joined us for this wonderful adventure.
Lego League
Fairbanks Office:
July
Much of June and July were smoky and muggy in Fairbanks. We still tried to make the best of it and hosted some outdoor activities. Some had to be canceled and others were not well attended due to air quality issues. Some of the activities we had planned were a Bike Rodeo and Bicycle Repair Clinic, a teen Kayaking Trip, and multiple Hiking Club Meet-ups.
August
We celebrated 20 years of Raven Homeschool in August! Families came out to enjoy the celebration and had a great time. We had food and entertainment, including face painting, balloon art, field games and snow cones. It was an awesome event to celebrate our awesome families and what we do here at Raven.
The Fairbanks Office was able to secure tickets for Gold Dredge #8. It was a wonderful opportunity for our families to learn the history of gold mining in Alaska. Families were even able to mine for gold and keep what they mined!
Our students and their families were lucky enough to ride the Riverboat Discovery in August. It was a wonderful opportunity for our families to learn more about Alaskan Native culture. The families had an amazing time and are eagerly waiting for this adventure again next summer.
Raven hosted Kid’s Day at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Lots of families stopped by our booth for information, enrollment and just to chat with our teachers. It was great to see everyone out enjoying what the Fairbanks community has to offer.
September
Raven Fairbanks Office started the academic year off with a beginning writing class for our 6-8th graders. It is a semester long class where students meet each Friday for writing and spelling instruction with Ms. Joyce Gardella.
Raven students had the opportunity to attend a Small Engines class at our CTE building. The short term intensive training class was for 9-12th graders and taught the basics of shop and tool safety, small engine repair fundamentals and small engine parts and operations.
We have Master Artist Randall Compton for another round of art classes! The students are enjoying the discovery of art through various techniques. Mr. Compton even brought in a live falcon for the students to draw!
Students and families had the opportunity to tour the Pioneer Park Air Museum and discover the heritage of aviation in Interior Alaska.
In partnership with UAF, Raven Fairbanks has been able to bring many fun learning experiences to our students through the UAF Smart Academy. The classes are being well attended by our students and the variety is exciting. A few examples of the classes are Juggling, Junior Engineers, Art Classes, Minecraft Adventures and Baking. Opportunities like this allow Raven to offer classes our students are interested in and unable to get through brick and mortar schools.
October
A Trapping class is being hosted at the Fairbanks District Office through December. High School students have been invited to attend this class to learn about animal conservation.
During the month of October, our students have had the opportunity to tour Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital for a behind the scenes tour of the hospital and what happens once the pets are taken out of the exam room. It was a great opportunity for those students interested in Veterinary Medicine.
Our Crazy 8’s Math Club is starting October 19th and will run for 8 weeks. We are anticipating a great group of students from Kindergarten through 5th grade to attend this club for learning, socialization and fun!
Student Spotlight - Joshua Kohler
Joshua Kohler is a 4th-year Raven Homeschool student, now in the 9th grade. We at Raven Homeschool – Fairbanks take great pride in recommending him for special recognition.
Joshua has always homeschooled, independently while in the Lower 48 and with Raven ever since the family was relocated to Fairbanks by the army. Joshua has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA over the last three years.
But Joshua does not do his school coursework 8 hours a day to the exclusion of all else but takes advantage of opportunities that come with schooling at home.
When Raven offers clubs and classes, Joshua is almost guaranteed to be there. Over the last 3 years he has been involved in art classes, LEGO robotics, walking/running club, and sewing classes. Thus far this year, he took the Introduction to Electricity class offered by the CTE department and is taking a trapping class and continuing his development as an artist in the fall semester art class.
As an elective, Joshua is preparing for a blacksmithing class offered at a local business. He is particularly excited about building a forge that he can take with him when the class is over.
For physical development, Joshua plays youth soccer in the summer and rock climbs, but mostly his activity is playing with his dogs.
Joshua is successful in the normal definition of school, but more than that Joshua is a prime example of what we all desire a Raven Homeschool student to become. Joshua has taken homeschool and made it a life-school. Joshua develops a healthy lifestyle, learns hand-working skills, and personalizes his education by exploring things beyond classroom assignments.
Juneau Office:
The first quarter of our school year has flown by and was packed full of fun activities for families. We kicked off the school year with our annual Ice Cream Social and Joan led trail hikes over the summer on many different trails around Juneau. Though July and August were lighter on activities while we helped families get their enrollment paperwork completed and curriculum purchased for the year, we had a great Open House in Aug to announce all the fun starting up in September and our Fall Picnic at Sandy Beach had good weather for our annual get together.
Many of our monthly activities started back up including Morning Mug Book Club for parents and Math Club for Middle School. We added a new flair to our monthly PAC Meetings by adding on a thematic potluck lunch and student activity, and those have been very well attended. We also started up a monthly Lego Club for kids to have fun building together with some different challenges each month. Another great opportunity for parents this school year are our monthly Parent Workshops on a variety of topics to help support families better.
We also resumed and started some new weekly activities in September. Marvelous Mondays began again with some fun get-to-know-you activities in Sept and Raven-themed activities in Oct. A couple of our Raven parents started up Terrific Tuesday activities and so far they have played games, made cookies, done fall crafts, made seed packets for future planting, and learned about how to take vital signs. Chess club has also been a very popular addition to our weekly routine and every one of our chess boards has been filled most weeks. Other weekly activities that started up in September were DARE classes for 5th-6th grades, Battle of the Books, and Lego League, all of which have great participation.
A few other highlights of the quarter include School Photos, the Healthy Futures Challenge, MAP Assessments, and a visit from High School Counselor Ryan. Our National Honor Society students are meeting monthly to collaborate and we are also doing monthly meetings with activities for our graduating seniors to build class camaraderie. We are excited about our in-person Scholastic Book Fair in Oct to get great books into the hands of our students and hope that families will continue to get involved in all the opportunities available to them this year.
Student Spotlight - Linstid family
The Linstid ladies cheered on their dad this summer as he trained, prepared, and raced in the Ironman this year. Their art skills got some good practice on the banner they made him and they were a big encouragement to their IronDad.
Wasilla Office:
“Leaves”
By Elise N. Brady
How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.
At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.
We have had an incredibly wet fall! Can you believe that the trees are mostly bereft of their leaves and that the snow keeps creeping down the mountains- getting closer and closer? We have also arrived at the end of first quarter! Where did the time go?
July
July was full of ILP meetings- and excitement for the beginning of the 22-23 school year!
August
ILPs continued to be a major focus here in the Wasilla office, as families were continuing to sign up. Raven sponsored the Chicks Exhibit at the state fair and enjoyed seeing our Raven families from our different communities, as well as meeting people who were interested in homeschooling- and then signed up! There were those cute little baby chicks too! We also had one of our students, Elle, and her friend, Mikayla win first place in the talent competition (Alaska’s Got Talent) with their Irish Dance routine! First place garnered them a $2,500 check!
September
Workshops and clubs really got into the swing of things this month!
It has been exciting to see students coming into the office for the various workshops and clubs! We want to give a shout out to Miss Julia for managing the signups for us, and we want to give a shout out to the parents who are successfully using signups!
We have been glad to welcome Mr. Ron Bergey back as a science vendor. Students enjoyed his workshops. Whirlwind Tour of the Lab had students learning about various aspects of working in a lab. Introduction to Insects, Bees, and Honey had a little twist thrown in when the power went out for about 45 minutes! This didn’t faze the students or Ron- they had enough natural light to carry on! There are more workshops coming- so be checking signups; you don’t want to miss out!
LEGO hour has been well attended with fun challenges and wonderful creations! This club is free.
Are you interested in geography and learning about different places? If so, Geography Club is for you! PS: There is food involved!
Come to Games Club and learn a new game, or maybe play an old one, and make some friends! Games Club meets the third Thursday of the month and is for students 3rd grade and up. This is a free club.
ASL (American Sign Language) Club is the place to learn how to sign and learn more about the deaf culture. This club is for K-12th grade.
Bowling Club, which meets the second Wednesday of every month at North Bowl in Wasilla, is the place to be if you want to be a part of something where all ages are invited, as well as every member of the family!
Both Crafternoon and ARTiculate are workshops that engage students in a creative way. Crafternoon consists of fun, free crafting projects and is held the 2nd Friday of the month. ARTiculate is also a free workshop where students will complete an art activity based on famous artists and works of art. Students have enjoyed these workshops- the more the merrier!
Do you have a preschooler enrolled in Raven? Bring them to Preschool Learn & Play. Check the weekly S’mores for days and times.
The students who are involved in the Book Club- Little House on the Prairie Series- are enjoying discussing the books and doing activities from them. So far, they have made butter and corn husk dolls!
The Writing Workshop is moving students along nicely in understanding the different components of how to write a sentence, paragraph, and short story.
The Nature Inspired Crafts workshop, for students in 1st-6th grade, made some amazing leaf lanterns. We are looking forward to seeing their next project!
We’ve also had a couple of Juggling workshops- what do you think? Can you juggle? Do you want to learn how? Watch your S’mores for future opportunities!
Do you like to cook or bake? Watch for the Culinary Cook/Bake Off days! They happen once a month and are ever so tasty! The next Bake Off will be Monday, Nov. 14th- Something Pumpkin.
We are looking forward to October 31st! Come by the office between 11:00-3:00 to trick or treat and check out the first day of the SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR!
Student Spotlight - Elle Chandler
Our very own Elle Chandler, an 8th grade student, recently attended Mat-Su Youth Court Criminal Law Training Course. It was a week-long class that consisted of 15 training hours and culminated in a bar exam. Elle passed her bar exam and was sworn into the Mat-Su Youth Court by Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford.
What is Mat-Su Youth Court? According to their website, "Mat-Su Youth Court ("MSYC") provides an alternative forum for first-time, low-level juvenile offenders to have their cases resolved in a peer-to-peer program. It is a state-sanctioned court that operates in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, which deals with first-time juvenile offenders that have committed misdemeanors."
Do you have something amazing that your student has done or is doing? Send us an email and picture so that we can share with our Raven family!
