Rocket Run Information
Results are in.... Over $18,000 was raised from Rocket Run Week! Prizes and T-shirts will be distributed during three pick-up events next week (Monday 12/14, Wednesday 12/16, and Friday 12/18). Please review the Event Summary for Prize winners and timeframes for t-shirt and prize pick-up. All students will receive a t-shirt; we made our best guess for t-shirt sizes that were not submitted.

ROCK CREEK OFFICE HOURS
Starting January 4th- New Office Hours
The school office staff will be available for pickup or drop-offs during the following hours only:
Mondays: 2 pm -4 pm
Tuesday -Friday: 10 am -12:00 pm
Office staff will be available by phone and email 7:30 am -4:00 pm Monday thru Friday.
Please note: These hours may be subject to change depending on what is happening with the metrics.
STUDENT DIRECTORY IS GOING DIGITAL
The PTC is collecting information for a Digital Directory for students to connect with each other! This is completely optional and all information included is voluntary. The Digital Directory will be stored on the PTC Website in a password-protected page. The Digital Directory is only for use by the Rock Creek Elementary Community.
Submission Deadline requested by December 18, 2020
It is our goal to have the first edition finalized and on the PTC website by Winter Break so that families have the option to connect with friends during the two weeks. We will periodically update the Digital Directory on an as needed basis.

The Rock Creek Parent-Teacher Club
All Rock Creek Parents are automatically members of the Parent Teacher Club (PTC). The PTC is a great way to learn about the exciting things happening at Rock Creek. There are tons of ways to get involved! Connect with the PTC at our meetings, on Facebook, via text message(text: @rcptcto 81010 to join)and through our website.
Do you or your child have an interest they would like share with other kids? We would love to hear from you!
The PTC is currently seeking volunteers to help facilitate Zoom Clubs for 4th and 5th graders, providing a time to connect and socialize over shared Interests. Volunteers will be in student Zooms and possible club topics could be: book club, interactive game club (uno, checkers, Minecraft). DEVICE PROTECTION FEES REMINDER
We have some Rock Creek families who still need to pay for their Device Protection. If you enrolled in the Damage/Loss Protection Program and have not paid the $20.00 fee, you may pay for the coverage using the District's Online Payment System. Here is the link to pay online: Online Payments.

UPCOMING SCREENING FOR KINDERGARTEN AND NEW TO ROCK CREEK 1ST GRADE STUDENTS
Starting in December and ending the first part of January, staff will be screening kindergarten students for potential reading difficulties as required by Senate Bill 612. We have been doing this test since 2017, but it will be more visible during CDL. The screening will happen online during the school day. A reading support person will join the kindergarten teacher on their Zoom session and students may be put in a break-out room to read to the adult. The test should take no longer than 5 minutes as each of the 3 parts are timed for 1 minute. All grade K (and students new to 1st grade) will be getting screened for potential reading difficulties before the end of January.
Please don’t coach your child during this test. The distraction could hamper their score more than help, as the assessment is timed. It will be important we get an accurate picture of their reading abilities. If any concerns surface for your child, you will receive a letter by the end of January, along with a plan for supporting your child.

PRE-REGISTER BY DEC. 11TH FOR WINTER BREAK MEALS
Free meals are available to all children 1-18 over Winter Break, December 21-January 1. You must register to receive Winter Break meals. Meal boxes with five breakfasts and five lunches will be available on December 22 and 29 from 11a.m.-12 p.m. at the following locations: Aloha, Beaverton, Southridge, Sunset and Westview High Schools plus Vose Elementary School. You don’t need to be a student at those schools to pick up meals.
To register, please fill out the Winter Break Meal Request Form by 9 p.m. on Friday, December 11. Please indicate the number of children (ages 1-18) who will need meals.

GRIEF: It's not a topic we like to talk about, but it is something we all experience at one time or another. Right now, many of us are grieving the life and traditions that we have been forced to change this holiday season. Also, many of us are grieving the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19 or other illnesses. Here is a great resource with some ideas that may help you navigate this challenging season

Parenting During the Pandemic - An online workshop held on Zoom on December 10.
Rockstar Readers Book Club - An online monthly book discussion for grades 3-5 that explores books from various genres with an emphasis on diverse stories.
OBOB Trivia for Grades 3-5 - Registration information can be found on our OBOB website, along with practice questions for this year's books.
OBOB teams have been formed and should start reading!!! There are sample battle questions at https://library.cedarmill.org/kids/obob/
If you have a team that has not registered, you need a team parent to email the list of team participants and team name to KatieEMurry@hotmail.com as soon as possible! An email will go to team parents about starting mock battles and real battles in January, so use the break to read, read, read!

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS
Basic First Aid
School aged kids are prone to injuries. Implementing safer practices in the home, in the car, and around water can help prevent more serious injuries.
Tips for general basic first aid guidance:aid n your
· Keep a well-stocked first aid kit in the car and in the home
· First aid kits should be stored in an easy to get to location and out of reach of small children.
· Make sure school aged children know the purpose of first aid kits and where they are stored.
· Check your first aid kit regularly for expiration dates and/or need for battery replacements.
· Consider taking a basic first aid class through your local Red Cross https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class
Basic first aid guidance for minor scrapes (skin injuries that do not penetrate the skin layer):
· Wash hands
· Stop bleeding by applying pressure with a clean cloth or gauze pad
· Wash the injury with running water. Ok to apply soap around the wound but avoid using soap directly on broken skin.
· Avoid using products such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide on broken skin; it can be abrasive to the skin and delay healing time.
· Cover the wound with a clean bandage or gauze pad and tape.
· Change the dressing daily or when soiled
· Watch for signs of infection and notify your health care provider of symptoms such as redness, red streaking, swelling, drainage, and increasing pain.
· Skin injuries that do not penetrate the skin layer will not need stitches but need to be monitored for infection.
Guidance for cuts/lacerations (skin injuries that penetrate the skin layer):
· Wash hands and apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze pad and consider need for evaluation by a healthcare provider.
· The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states the following in regards to sutures:
o Cuts longer than ½ inch (12 mm) usually need sutures.
o On the face, cuts longer than ¼ inch (6 mm) usually need to be seen by a health care provider. They usually need closure with sutures or skin glue
o Any open wound that may need sutures should be seen as soon as possible. Ideally, they should be checked and closed within 6 hours. Reason: to prevent wound infections.

Due to COVID restrictions they will not be hosting an Open House, so each school has posted an Informational video. We encourage you to go the school's website and watch the video presentations with your student to gather information about the school(s) and programs.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
This month Beaverton Safe Routes to School invites your school community to go on a Snowflake Hunt! To participate make a snowflake and place it in a window facing the street and then go for a walk and count how many snowflakes you find. We hope this provides your family with a fun activity and a little encouragement to get outside for a walk or roll. Use the link below for a snowflake making tutorial and make sure your trip is counted in the following ways:
1. Send an email to email@example.com with the number of snowflakes you found. BSD students (or parents) please include how many students participated and what school they are from.
2. BSD elementary students can also log their miles on their Marathon Kids account. If you need information on how to set up a Marathon Kids account, contact your PE teacher.
Cold Weather Doesn’t Mean You Need to Stay Inside!
With the change in weather it can be tempting to stay indoors. We know that our kids need to move every day and the extensive associated benefits of physical exercise. Here are some tips to help you build healthy (and fun!) habits into the remote school day:
- Start your day by taking a walk or a bike ride. Do you still travel to a different location for school? Then make that trip an active one! Too far to walk? Try parking halfway and walking the rest. Commit to walking or biking 2 days a week and start building those healthy habits.
- Take movement breaks in between classes or at lunch time. A brisk walk around the block will get your heart pumping and re-energize you for the rest of your day.
- Need to pick up your library holds or free lunch? Bike over to your pickup location and reap the benefits of an active trip while checking off your to-do list.
Winter Walk and Bike PreparationDon’t let the cold weather keep you inside all season! Time spent being active outside can
boost mood and mental health and keep kids focused and learning better. With some simple
preparation, your children can still be active and stay safe and warm during our winter
• Wear a raincoat or poncho and/or carry an umbrella.
• Carry a plastic bag if you need to store wet gear.
• Wear gloves and waterproof shoes. Carry (or store) extra shoes and socks to change
• Find an under-cover area to park your bike if possible. If not, bring a plastic bag to cover
• Wear reflective gear and/or bright colors and use a light on your bicycle.
• Only walk or bike in the rain if you are comfortable, as roads are slick and visibility may
THE DISTRICT NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The District has more than 10,600 library books that are overdue or lost. In addition, we have more than 2,200 textbooks and devices (those that are NOT currently being used for Comprehensive Distance Learning) that also need to be returned. Some of these items are likely under your student’s bed or sitting in a backpack.
We desperately need to recover these items or the associated fines for the lost items. Only then can schools begin to replace books and devices for future use.
Please search for overdue and lost items: library books, textbooks from last school year and school-issued devices (iPads, Chromebooks) that your student isn’t currently using. Search your in-box, too, for any emails from (firstname.lastname@example.org) or (email@example.com), which will indicate that your student has a missing item.
Then return that item to any BSD school. You have several options: (Please arrive in a mask.)
Return items to your school during regular school hours. Some schools also may offer evening drop-off hours. Check with your school’s newsletter for additional drop-off hours and directions.
Return items to any Library Book Bus stop. See schedule and map for days and times.
Pay lost fine through the district’s Online Payment System.
If you’ve already returned materials or items were left in classrooms last spring, please contact your school library staff via email to let them know. Library materials are quarantined for up to one week before being checked in, so it will take time for fines to be resolved in InTouch accounts.
Thank you for helping us get resources back to our schools so that they can be re-distributed to those students who need them.
Open Enrollment for the 2021-2022 School Year
The Open Enrollment application window for the 2021-22 school year is now open.
Applications will be accepted from Monday, December 7 through Friday, January 22 at 2 p.m. Applications are available online, at each school and at the District Office. Completed applications should be returned to the school for which the student is applying.
Beaverton and Southridge High Schools each have 50 open slots. There are no open slots available at elementary or middle schools. Principals will make the final determination as to what grade levels will be filled with these Open Enrollment slots. For more information, please visit the Open Enrollment webpage.

Student Testing on Hold
Due to the Governor’s “freeze,” all planning for testing (Summa/SAT/ACT) is on hold until further notice.
Inclement Weather Information During CDL
All classes and school schedules will continue on time in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL), even if district facilities are closed due to inclement weather. In other words, we will not have any "snow days" in CDL.
If district facilities are closed, any on-site classes/programs including Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI) will be canceled. All daytime and evening activities/events also will be canceled. For more information, please visit the Inclement Weather Information webpage.
