Vol. 5 Issue: 15 "NWA'S PREMIER PRIVATE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL"
BE DISTINCTIVE
Recently, Dr. Jeff Mattner gave me the book titled "Future Ready" by Dr. Lynn Swaner. Dr. Swaner is the Director of Though Leadership through the Association of Christian Schools International. She co-authored the book with some of her colleagues and one of which (Mathew Lee) lives here in NWA. A couple years back I did some work with Mathew and helped him with some of his Christian School case studies etc. Dr. Swaner focuses this particular book on key concepts Christian Schools need to explore to be future ready. These concepts were revealed based on a case study in 2019-2020 of 11 Christian Schools across the nation. I like some of the literature she references and some of the concepts that she has. Over time I will reference more of them. One of the ones I enjoyed was her concept of "Be Distinctive." With this concept she references James K.A. Smith:
"What do you want? That's the question. It is the first, last, and most fundamental question of Christian discipleship. In the Gospel of John, it is the first question Jesus poses to those who would follow him. This is the most incisive, piercing question Jesus can ask of us precisely because we are what we want and you are what you love."
Our wants, our desires, and our loves shape everything we do. They shape our priorities, our choices, and the bounds of what we are willing and unwilling to do.
"Over time, what we love shapes who we are and what we're known for."
Several years back when I took the principal role and Ben Mayes was the Superintendent we made the commitment to be distinctly a Christian School and that above all else we would have Christ at the center of all that we do. It's not that there were any glaring issues or that the school wasn't loving and honoring the Lord. We just wanted to ensure that He was priority 1. That is why this concept that Dr. Swaner discussed meant something to me. We had to define clearly what we wanted to be as a school and we wanted WHO we love (Jesus) to shape who we are and ultimately what we are known for, and what we are known for must be driven by our mission. This allows you to remain "Mission True" as coined by Peter Greer and Chris Horst.
"We found that when schools love the mission that has been entrusted to them, they are willing to go to great lengths to achieve it." -Dr. Swaner
We love our mission here at Shiloh and are committed to keeping Christ at the center and foundation of our school. It has been so fun to see how God has moved at our school and he gets all the glory for it.
