Story time with Mrs. Sampson
Story time is back once again this week - at 3pm on Wednesday, June 17th. This week we'll be reading Drawing Lessons from a Bear, by David McPhail . It's a great special one - which reminds us of the importance of growth mindset! We hope you'll be able to join us live, but if not, the read alouds are saved so that you can enjoy them at any time. The links of all the previous and upcoming books are listed in each homeroom folder in Edsby, on the left hand side.
Report Cards and IEP's
I've had many questions about how report cards and IEP's will be distributed to families this year. We are awaiting further information, and I can assure you that one way or the other, you'll receive them! As soon as we know more about how they will be distributed, I will be in touch.
Transition Supports
Most years, in June we consider the supports we can put in place to help make the transition to school, or to a new grade, most successful for all students. This year is a little different, as we aren't quite sure yet what we'll be transitioning to in September! Nevertheless, we are still committed to supporting a transition process that meets your child's needs. We have been working on considering what this might look like....for example a Principal's Dashboard that you and your family can access with all key school information including busing, staffing, and even a video tour of our school. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can best support - please get in touch. Creativity and thinking outside the box is encouraged!
Dropping off Library Books, etc.
Several families have been in touch, asking if they can still come by to drop off library books to the school. This week (Monday - Friday) I'll be in the building, supporting as teachers work to shut down their classrooms, following a strict social distancing protocol. I'll leave a box outside the main doors from 9am - 2pm. If you'd like to drop anything off, please feel free to do so and I'll make sure the items get to the spot where they belong!
Moving Over the Summer?
If your family happens to be moving over the summer - please let us know at your earliest convenience. We have already created classes based on who is coming and who is going - so the most current information is always the best! Just email Mrs. Sampson at jennifer_sampson@kprdsb.ca. Thank you!
Kindergarten Registration
Will you or someone you know be registering your child for Year 1 Kindergarten with us next year? Now is the time! We have a some events coming up in the next few weeks to support this important transition, but we can only include you if we know you are registered. Please ensure you complete this critical process as soon as you can. You can register at: http://kprdsb.ca/en/our_schools/resources/elementaryprograms/kindergarten.html
Kawartha Heights Family Dashboard
If you are looking for some alternate activities to do with your family, the Kawartha Heights Family Dashboard is for you! You can find the link below, but you can also access it any time in the top left corner of your child's classroom homepage on Edsby.
A bit of information from the Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB:
Child Care Programs
We know that many of our parents have interest in the recent government announcement that, starting today, child care centres are permitted to re-open, after fulfilling the new operational requirements outlined by the Ministry of Education.
Child care operators are currently completing their planning in collaboration with regional service managers and local health units in order to safely reopen. Operators will be contacting their existing families directly to provide more information about their program-specific reopening plan and timing. If you are interested in requesting service from a local child care, please contact the program operator.
At KPR, we are committed to working in collaboration with our schools’ licensed child care operators, who are working diligently on enhanced health and safety protocols, policies and procedures. Once these are approved by the local medical officer of health, child care operators in our schools will resume service to families.
Tentative agreement – Secondary School Teachers
We were very pleased to announce earlier this week that we have reached tentative agreement on a new collective agreement for our secondary contract teachers. Our approximately 700 contract secondary teachers have been without a collective agreement since September, 2019, and the new agreement extends until August, 2022.
Our teachers have been doing a tremendous job through this period of uncertainty, and along with our parents, we are excited to move forward together towards even greater success for our students.
Negotiations continue toward new collective agreements with our elementary contract, and secondary and elementary occasional teachers.
KPR Summer School
A reminder that summer school registration will close on June 15th, with summer school starting on June 29th and finishing on July 27th.
This year, summer school courses will be offered through eLearning. In online courses, students will continue to read, work independently or as a member of a group, complete assignments and interact with their classmates and teacher. All classes are conditional upon sufficient enrolment and are subject to cancellation. A staff member will contact students if a course is cancelled, by the weekend of June 27th.
Interested students can register for summer school here: https://forms.gle/mkvGeTAkQEbufrG3A
Summer School for Grade 8s
Once again this summer we are offering the Start! Program for Grade 8s going into Grade 9. Start! focuses on literacy and numeracy skills, and developing the necessary inter and intra-personal skills for high school, all while earning a secondary school credit (GLD2O, Discovering the Workplace). In this online course Grade 8 students will read, work independently and/or as a member of a group, complete assignments and interact with their classmates and teacher for approximately six hours per week day, from June 29th until July 27th.
More information about this program, and all of our Summer School offerings, is available on our website, Summer School web page.
Just one more thing....
