The Pearl

Summary

Coyotito, a baby, get stung by a scorpion. Kino and Juana take him to the greedy doctor. Who does nothing to help because he won't help the poor.


The next day, Kino and Juana go out in the ocean on a boat to dive for oysters. Kino gets into the water and finds many oysters. He gets back in the boat and the last one they open has a pearl in it.


The doctor heard Kino had the pearl and went to investigate. The doctor made Coyotito sick and throw up. That night, someone tired to steal the buried pearl.'


The next day they went to sell the pearl. None of the buyers would buy it for a price Kino thought was right. So he decided he'd go to the capital to sell it.


Juana tried to do away with the pearl, but Kino made sure she didn't and hit her. Someone burned their house down while they were out. They had to hide out with the baby in Juan Tomas's house (Kino's brother).


Kino, Juana, and Coyotito left the next night. When it was morning, Kino and Juana stopped to rest. They saw that they were being followed and changed the route into the mountains.


There, the trackers found them shortly later. That night Coyotito was shot by one of the trackers. They went back to their home town and disposed of the pearl.

Characters

Kino - A fisherman. He's a fierce and quiet man. He's willing to keep his family safe no matter what the cost. But greed gets to him when he gets the pearl.

Juana - She's a good wife. She's protective of her child. Even though she doesn't talk much to her husband, they have a pretty decent relationship and she knows what to do. Juana watches Coyotito more than Kino does.

Coyotitio - Is just an infant.


Doctor - He's a very greedy man. He doesn't care much of what happens to his patients. The doctor is a rich man who lives in the City of Stone.

Where and When??

The book takes place in Lazpaz, Mexico near the gulf in a poor town with houses made of straw.. The time is in the 1930s.

Theme

Greed is a bad thing.

It turns people against others, making them selfish and careless of them. Greed makes you only want more.
