Robertsville Review
March 2nd
RAMdom Student of the Week
Janie
Janie is an amazingly creative and inspiring kid. She is probably best known around here for winning the CubeSat digital arts competition. Her design will accompany the CubeSats that our NASA classes are designing and building for an actual space flight.
Janie expressed a love for STEM, saying, "STEM is a great program for kids who want to create things and express themselves. I am able to create and work with computers and programming. It's just cool to see my achievements in what I create."
When she is not attending school, Janie likes to program simulations at home using JavaScript and design art projects using our design software Gimp. She has plans to enroll in the digital arts program at ORHS where she wants to learn Photoshop.
Janie wants to attend college in the near future as well as medical school. She has an interest in becoming a surgeon. She also wants to find the time to learn German and revisit Germany where she lived for a couple of years as a small child.
Janie is an inspiration, and it is a pleasure to see her interest in science, computer programming, and STEM grow each year. We wish her the best and thank her for her creative achievements here at RMS.

Club of the Week
Jazz Band
The Robertsville Middle School jazz band is comprised of 25 6th - 8th grade students and is under the direction of Mr. Michael Spirko.
This ensemble meets during the RAM Time enrichment period on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.
Students learn to perform repertoire in jazz that embodies the styles of swing, latin, rock and roll, as well as funk. Not only do students explore the multiple facets and genres of jazz, but they learn improvisation skills through spontaneous composition.
The Robertsville Middle jazz band maintains an active performance schedule at community and school events.
Success Starts Here - Lindsay Lee
After ORHS I went to UT Knoxville, where I majored in mathematics and Spanish and minored in Portuguese. During my last year at UT I won a Rhodes Scholarship, which is a prestigious scholarship to go to the University of Oxford in England for graduate school. Only 32 Americans win this scholarship every year. At Oxford, I got one Masters degree in statistics and another Masters in public policy. After Oxford, I was hired at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The World Health Organization is the leading organization in the world for public health. They do everything from making sure people can get vaccinations against diseases, to helping prevent violence against children. At the WHO I am a "Technical Officer," which just means I provide expertise on a particular topic; my topic is disability. I am responsible for developing and implementing a survey about disability around the world. The survey that I work with, called the Model Disability Survey, has been given to 35,000 people worldwide in countries like Chile, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. The results from the survey give governments evidence to change their laws in order to improve the lives of people with disabilities. I have worked at WHO since 2016.
If I could give "younger me" advice about middle school I'd tell myself, "Middle school is only the beginning of a wonderful and --hopefully -- long life!"
My favorite memory of Robertsville Middle School: I had Ms. Reed for Algebra I and Geometry in 7th and 8th grade. In her class we always celebrated "Pi Day" on March 14 in honor of the number "pi", which equals 3.14. Everyone brought in a delicious pie to eat, and we wore "I <3 pi" shirts! It was always a lot of fun. I still have the shirt today!

MATHCOUNTS Competition
The RMS MATHCOUNTS team took 4th place in their competition on Saturday!!
The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. Created in 1983, it is the longest-running MATHCOUNTS program and is open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.
Mural Winner
In the fall, the ORNL Federal Credit Union commissioned Oak Ridge Schools to design a three-wall mural. The theme was "Together We Thrive." Each wall would contain work from a specific school level (elementary, middle, and high school). A contest was created and all Oak Ridge schools submitted designs.
Students in our Digital Art program submitted designs as part of a project.
We would like to offer congratulations to Chatelaine McBroom, an RMS 5th grader, for creating the piece that won for the middle school portion. What a great and talented young lady!
