Peter the Great

Peter Alexeyevich, commonly known as Peter the Great, was declared Sovereign of all Russia. Peter the Great expanded the Tsardom into a larger empire which i snow a major European power. He also led a cultural revolution which replaced a few of the traditionalist and medieval political and social systems with more modern and scientific ones.

Accomplishments

Peter the Great formed Russia's first official army in 1699. Peter also acquired territory in Estonia, Latvia and lastly, Finland. He defeated the Swedish army by sending the troops to the city of Poltava. Peter the Great was able to transform Russia into the Russian Empire.

The Great Northern War

Peter the Great began a long war against the kingdom of Sweden in the 1700's.

Previously, Russia had been defeated. A Swedish force of which was made up of 8,000 men defeated a Russian army more than 4 times its size. Peter rebuilt his army. In conclusion, in 1709, Russia defeated the Swedes and they finally won territory along the Baltic Sea.

Catherine the Great Follows Peter's Lead

Peter unfortunately died on February 8th, 1725 without an heir. Due to this, it set off a power struggle within the Romanov family. Russian nobles reasserted their independence. A new monarchy took the reins of power firmly in hand. She is known as Catherine the Great!

In Conclusion

By mid 1700s, absolute monarchs ruled four of the five countries leading in Europe. Britain was the only exception due to it's strong Parliament. These five nations competed against each other. Radical changes soon effected the French monarchy which would upset the balance of power which then would revolutionize European society.
