Week of September 28 - October 2

Life Principle of the Week

RESPONSIBILITY- the state of being accountable

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" -Eleanor Roosevelt

The Weeks in Review

In Science, we spent the last few weeks in our environments and ecosystems learning about how energy flows within the system. From deserts to forests, and oceans to tundras, we learned about the properties that make each ecosystem what it is! Then, we reviewed how all the energy comes from the Sun and is transferred within the food web from producers to consumers, and finally to decomposers. The flow of energy may look different in each food web, so our kids got the chance to design two of their own for deserts and rainforests. Take a look at their digital work below!

In Social Studies, we finished all of our Culture squares and those are in the process of being assembled into one group for each class to represent the class as a whole. Hopefully, from this our students came to realize that everyone is from somewhere and what makes our nation so great is we value and respect every person's heritage and culture!

Pine Cove is coming!

It's coming!! We leave WEDNESDAY morning! Please try and ensure your child is not late to school that day. To help you pack, please see the Packing List below! It will help you to make sure your child has everything they need for this trip!

To help follow our adventure at Pine Cove, the staff there does a tremendous job of documenting each group as they go about their day! They post pictures to Facebook to help parents back home see what their child is experiencing!

The Pine Cove staff will capture our groups each day and upload these photos each evening to a custom photo album on the Pine Cove IWS Facebook page. The album will be specific to Austin Elementary is a fantastic way for school staff and parents back home to check in to see their kids enjoying their time at camp each day.

On Friday afternoon we sent home Progress Reports, and I wanted to let each of you know about some experiences we have had lately. With our move to Schoology this year not everything has made the connections we would have hoped over to the Parent Portal. The gradebook you see in Schoology is the most current I have for my classes. So if you are ever looking for the most current information on your child's grades, Schoology is where to look!

We don't have a ton of grades so far this 9-weeks, so the grades you do see on Progress Reports are heavily inflated by few results. That will change over the course of the next few weeks, but just keep that in mind. As always, if you have any questions about your child's progress please do not hesitate to ask.

**If you are wondering how to log into Schoology, you should have received an email with a temporary password on September 3rd from Schoology.

On Deck: Science & Social Studies

This coming week we will leave for Pine Cove and take our learning on the road beginning Wednesday! We are so excited for this trip and for the learning that takes place over those three days in many areas including; landforms, environments, habitats, animal adaptations, and more!

Forgotten Lunch Table

Lunches brought to the office that have been forgotten in the car or at home will be placed on the FORGOTTEN LUNCH TABLE directly outside the cafeteria. Students will check this table everyday as they walk in the cafeteria if they have forgotten their lunches.
