This weekend, I stumbled across an article that really resonated with me. I wanted to share it with you all because I think it very much affirms the work we are doing at Sacred Heart and the overall vision of our school.

As standardized testing rages on and as we enter into our heavy season of testing, I often wonder, like most people, "Are we doing the right thing?" However, the question really ought to be "Are we measuring the right thing?"

This article titled "7 things every kid should master", presents the case that YES, we should measure what our kids know and are able to do. However, we should think really really carefully about what it is we're measuring. The author then goes on to outline 7 things that kids should truly master while they're at school.

She presents a case for the following themes: Reading, Inquiry, Flexible Thinking and Use of Evidence, Conversation, Collaboration, Engagement, and Well-Being.

As I was reading through each item, I couldn't help but think "Yes. We're doing that! And we're doing that! And we're doing THAT!"

We ARE working to develop a love of reading (and measuring it). We're working to develop a sense of inquiry ("What do you wonder?") and recording these wonderings. Yes, we are developing a culture of thinking and reasoning and making it visible for others to see. We are supporting conversations in our classroom and opportunities for collaboration. We are seeking ways to engage students through creative Labs and new books. And most importantly, at the core of who we are at a Catholic School, we are working to support and promote the well being of our students, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I highly recommend reading the article and I am definitely interested in hearing your thoughts. Give it a go and send me a note. Do you think we're focused on and measuring the right things at Sacred Heart?
