Parents Can Help Children Become Responsible Citizens
Citizens in a democratic society have many rights . . . but they also have responsibilities. Here are five ways parents can help their children grow up to become responsible citizens:
- Set a good example. Take an active role in your community. Attend a meeting of your city council or school board. Take your child with you.
- Expect your child to do things for the good of the family. Help them see that when everyone contributes, everyone benefits.
- Take part in community service projects as a family. Clean up trash in a nearby park. Set up a paper recycling program. Help children with disabilities enjoy physical activity. Or, choose another activity your family can do together.
- Learn about current events. Choose an issue that affects your neighborhood or community. Read about it in the local newspaper and watch news programs for more information. Perhaps you and your child could attend a meeting on the subject.
- Teach your child the importance of fair play. Winning isn't everything. Children should learn to take pride in doing their best—not being the best.

Safety and Security
Parents and Guardians...please check in at the office at any time that you are on campus so that you can be checked in to the Raptor system and obtain an ID badge. This includes the time period before school starts. So, if you would like to be on the playground before school with your child, that is fine, but please check in and obtain an ID badge. This process is for the protection of all of our students and for you as well. Please share this information with other individuals (grandparents, aunts/uncles, child care providers, friends, etc.) that may be bringing your child to school. At this point in time, there is not a need to secure an ID badge if you are picking up your child at the end of the school day. If you have any questions about this process please ask me.
Parking near Shadow Hills
Parents and Guardians...please be respectful of our neighbors and patrons that live close to the school when choosing a place to park to drop-off/pick-up students in your vehicle. Recently, driveways have been blocked and cars have been parked in front of fire hydrants. In addition to avoiding driveways and fire hydrants it is important to avoid parking nearest the corners of the intersections of Goodyear & Sloan and Robson & Sloan as well as the entry/exit to the parking lot and bus loop. Blind spots are created and our buses are not able to turn on to Sloan when cars are too close to those points. You may need to park a little bit further away and then walk to meet your child. As a reminder...if your child is eligible to ride the bus, please consider this option! It saves you time and money! Take advantage of your taxes by having your student ride the bus! :)
Thank you!

Shadow Hills Fall Festival is September 21st!!
Volunteer to help with the Fall Festival this year! Here is the link for the Fall Festival online sign-up: http://signup.com/go/RFrm3f
We've set up the signups a little bit differently this year, in that set-up and take-down aren't booth specific, but are their own line-item. We also don't have teacher names listed on the booths, in the hopes that this will make people more likely to sign up for whichever volunteer spot they'd like, and to reduce the likelihood of parents not signing up for anything because their child's class booth is already full. We do, however, have the 6th grade booths specifically labeled as 6th grade, since these require parent/child teams.
If there are parents who would like to volunteer, but are unable to do so on the evening of the 21st, we will be pre-making and bagging cotton candy Thursday, 09/20 from 12:30-3:30, and would love the extra hands! :) Shifts for this are included in the sign-up list.
Thanks so much for helping out! We look forward to a great Festival!

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Dear Parent,
In the Boise School District, a core service of our school health program is the ongoing screening for specific problems that, when identified early, can prevent significant health and academic issues. The earlier these health conditions are detected, the more favorable the outlook for treatment and improvement of the child’s general well being. The health screenings that are routinely conducted in our program include height/weight, dental, vision and spinal screenings.
There are wide variations in “normal” height and weight. Many factors, including genetics, can affect a child’s size. For more information on normal growth, including growth charts and BMI (Body Mass Index), you can log onto: www.kidsgrowth.com or www.medcalc.com/growth
Poor dental health can cause pain and affects overall health and a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. Our school dental screening looks for the more obvious signs of dental problems, such as red & swollen gums, large cavities, broken teeth, or infections. The purpose of our screening is to detect problems, and is not a substitute for regular dental care.
The purpose of the school vision screening program is to identify students with visual impairments. Early detection of vision problems will provide a child more opportunity for educational success. We are able to screen for possible problems with distance vision and Amblyopia (lazy eye) at school. We are unable to screen for many vision problems, including those with near vision. For this reason, a more thorough exam by an eye doctor every 2 years is appropriate for most children.
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that occurs in the cervical, thoracic and/or lumbar spine. Scoliosis occurs during rapid growth spurts of the pre-adolescent and adolescent periods. The purpose of school screening is to detect scoliosis at an early stage when it can be monitored and early treatment programs will be effective in halting progression of the deformity.
This year, as a part of the Boise School District health program, we will be conducting vision and health/weight screening in Kindergarten, 2nd and 5th grade students. The dental hygienist from the Boise School Dental Clinic will be screening for dental problems this year. And later in the year, we will be conducting scoliosis screening for fifth grade girls. If any problems are noted on your child’s screening, a referral form will be sent home with your student. If you would like to discuss the screenings or have any other questions about the screening process, please contact me. I will be happy to discuss this with you.
Sincerely,
Terri Lindemann
