PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Big Week at GRE
We celebrated our nation’s Veterans this week. This week concluded our Operation Kids for Troops, a collection of items to send overseas to active service men and women. The entire project is facilitated by Angela Goud, our media specialist, whose husband served overseas and is now a veteran. Mrs. Gould led a group of student leaders that worked the past few weeks making announcements, fliers, organizing the collection, and finally packing boxes. Thank you to those that contributed and helped with this project.
In addition, we celebrated all veterans at our annual Veterans Day assembly. As part of the assembly, we invited veterans that had a connection to a Glacier Ridge student. Veterans and their families heard from our guest speaker, Captain Alex Coachys, who spoke about the parallel values between service and those at GRE. In addition, Eugene Sunday facilitated the white table ceremony, which honors lost and fallen soldiers.
To celebrate, our 3rd graders sang patriotic songs while veterans had a light breakfast. Students and staff formed a tunnel and clapped for our veterans. In addition, all students helped to write personal letters, signs, and decorations to honor our guests.
If you didn’t know, Sunday is World Kindness Day. It seems perfectly paired with Veterans Day. There is no greater act of kindness is it than to give dedication and sacrifice for our Country’s freedom. However, like a kindness boomerang, acts of kindness can spark other acts of kindness. To help honor our Veterans, so many people contribute time and donations to make the event happen. Thank you to, the PTO, Tim Hortons, Sawmill Forests, and Mrs. Goodman’s Bakery, volunteers, and community members contributed funding, donated materials, and volunteered time to support the event.
Lastly, as you likely know, we had a levy on the ballot this week. Per the news reports, we are still in a “count watch.” So I’m told, the absentee ballots are still being verified, although they needed to be postmarked by the day prior to the election. The Franklin Board of Elections legally/officially has until November 15 to count the ballots. They have until November 28 to verify the results. We anticipate an announcement sooner than November 28th.
Thank you to everyone that supports DCS and GRE and those that supported the levy. As you’ve heard me say before, we can always get better at what we do. Not passing the levy would have significantly impacted the quality that we can provide. We can certainly get better, but I’m not sure we can do more with less resources.
Sincerely,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal
