Principal's Message
Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,
Happy Sunday and the Second Sunday of Lent!
What a difference a week makes! We were so grateful for the beautiful weather last week--even with a little rain, it was a huge improvement over the extreme winter weather we all experienced the week before. From the needs survey we sent out last weekend, thankfully most sustained little or no damage to their homes and were back up and running by last Saturday or Sunday. God is good! Thank you to so many of you who reached out with offers to help any family who may have needed assistance following that week. We are blessed with such generosity in our SMGCS family!
Several have asked how or if the days we missed last week will need to be made up, or if there will be a change to the days around Easter that we are scheduled off. At this time, I do not have an answer as the diocese is requesting a waiver from TCCBED, so some or all of the days may not have to be made up. Many of the public school districts have already been granted waivers from the state for those days. I will communicate that decision once it is finalized.
The Teacher for the Day event that was to take place on Friday, February 19th has been rescheduled for Friday, March 12th. This Teacher for the Day event is for those students whose parents purchased this item during the 2020 Dinner, Dance, and Auction.
Speaking of the annual Dinner, Dance, & Auction, please save the date for our virtual Auction & Dinner, Evening of Light, which will take place this year on Saturday, April 10th! As well, we are in need of auction items for the Auction & Dinner.....vacation properties, timeshares, gift cards, and other experiences. If you can help, please contact our development coordinator, Laura Perez (development@smgschool.org). Though the format will be virtual, this year's Auction & Dinner promises to be an exciting evening for all! More information can be found further below in this newsletter, on the school website, and will be emailed and mailed in the coming weeks.
The deadline to take advantage of the Early Bird Registration & Enrollment savings for the 2021-2022 School Year is TONIGHT, February 28th! Please see the information further down in this newsletter with links for details including tuition information and instructions on how to apply. Tuition assistance is available ( https://smgschool.org/financial-aid ) and we encourage families to apply by March 1st to be considered in the first round of tuition assistance awarded, which will be announced to those who apply (for tuition assistance) by March 12th.
We ask you to please continue to share the good news of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School with any family and friends with school-aged children. Invite them to call to schedule a personal tour to learn more about SMGCS! YOU are our best advertisement and we need your help! Thank you!
The SMGCS Spirit Store will also close TONIGHT! There are several new designs and items to check out! Be sure to see the ad below with the link to place your order.
Finally, if you would like more information on Keeping a Holy Lent, please check out this Lenten infographic with explanations provided by our 7th & 8th Grade Religion/Literature teacher, Mrs. Pennell.

I pray you all enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a great week ahead!
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Laura Behee, M.Ed.

Virtue of the Month: RESPECT
All people are created in the image and likeness of God, with a soul that is able to love and live forever in heaven. Every single human person has great dignity and deserves our respect. To respect means to look again, since many times we only see what people are like on the outside. This virtue reminds us to look deeper and recognize that all of us are children of God and are loved by Him.
Saint Jeanne Jugan: Feast Day - August 30
Saint Jeanne Jugan was born into a poor family. She took a job in the kitchen of a wealthy woman, and helped her take care of the poor. In 1837, Jeanne and two other women decided to live together and dedicate their lives to God. One day, she found a homeless widow who was elderly and blind. Jeanne brought this widow home and let her sleep in her own bed. This act of charity grew into the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who now care for poor elderly people all around the world.
Saint Damien of Molokai: Feast Day – May 10
Jozef de Veuster entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and took the religious name Damien. He was sent as a missionary to Hawaii, where he spent 10 years befriending the people, enjoying their food, learning their language, traveling and building churches.
At that time, the Hawaiian government exiled anyone with leprosy to an isolated peninsula on the island Molokai. The bishop did not want to command any priest to go to this leper colony, so Saint Damien volunteered to go there and serve the people. When he arrived, he found the people living in terrible conditions and committing many sins. Saint Damien built houses, an orphanage and a church, giving dignity and respect to the people that everyone else had left for dead. He visited all the people in their homes every week. He started a choir and band for the children, and established perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Hundreds of the people were converted and baptized. After 16 years he himself contracted the disease and died at the age of 49.
Saint John Paul II: Feast Day - October 22
Karol Wojtyla experienced great suffering and loss as a child. His mother died when he was eight years old, and when Karol was 12 his only brother died. Karol was only 20 when his father died, leaving him alone in the world.
A brilliant student, actor, and devout Catholic, Karol eventually had to study, act, and pray in secret because he lived during the Nazi occupation of Poland. His archbishop secretly trained Karol and a few other young men for the priesthood, and Karol was ordained in 1946.
Despite so must sorrow and struggle, Karol possessed true greatness of soul. He believed in the dignity and goodness of all people and loved them. Along with being a scholar and actor, he was an outdoorsman and athlete, and possessed a great sense of humor. Others recognized his indomitable spirit and followed his natural leadership. He was ordained a bishop at the age of 38, the youngest in his country. He became the archbishop of Krakow, then a cardinal, and in 1978 was elected pope, taking the name Pope John Paul II.
Saint John Paull II’s deep appreciation and zeal for the dignity of all people changed the world. With the power of truth, he played an important role in the collapse of European Communism. He strengthened dialogue with Jewish, Islamic, Eastern orthodox, and Anglican believers. He visited and kissed the ground of 129 countries. He showed the dignity of people of all ages and cultures by beatifying over 1,000 people and canonizing over 400 saints to show that all people are called to holiness.

SPIRIT Hours
Volunteer Hour Policy-
We will be continuing with our SPIRIT Hour policy from last year. In the absence of Kountry Karnival, we will be working to find other ways that families can earn hours. Opportunities will be communicated via emailed SPIRIT Updates, the Trojan Times, and on our website.
All SMG families must complete 40 hours (20 hours by December 18, 2020, and 20 hours by May 14, 2021). Please note that due to having fewer events and volunteer opportunities at which to earn SPIRIT hours right now, we will defer charges for incomplete SPIRIT hours for 1st Semester until the end of the 2nd semester, and will reevaluate at that time.
Current Volunteer/Donation Opportunities:
- Disposable Face Masks & Gloves-Donate boxes of disposable face masks and gloves of all sizes and earn one SPIRIT hour for each box donated. Donations can be brought to the school front office, Monday - Friday between 7:30AM - 3:30PM.
- Items for Christmas Store 2021-Purchase new items for next year's (2021) Christmas store and receive one SPIRIT Hour for every $10 spent. Needed items include small toys, small household items, trinkets, gift bags, and tissue paper. Receipts must be included when donation is dropped off in order to receive SPIRIT hour credit. Donations can be brought to the school front office, Monday - Friday between 7:30AM - 3:30PM.

Healthy Together App
By now, most have downloaded the free Healthy Together app (found in the App Store). Please continue to complete the app before arriving in carline and be ready to show the completed screening to a faculty/staff member on duty in carline each morning. Multiple students can conveniently be added to one app. Please call the front office if you have any questions about how to install the app.
Student Email Accounts and Google Classroom
All students, whether learning On-Campus or via Distance Learning, have school email accounts that they generally access during computer class, and will also need to access Google Classroom. Parents of students in Grades 4th - 8th who are attending classes On-Campus were sent information and instructions for their student(s) to access their email accounts, log-in to Google Classroom, and create a bookmark on their home devices. Students have also be given this information during computer class, as many 4th-8th Grade teachers provide feedback on assignments, etc. to students via Google Classroom. As well, being familiar with logging in to Google Classroom will be helpful should we ever need to move to distance learning during the school year. If you did not receive your student's log-in information or have questions, please contact Mrs. Daly (jdaly@smgschool.org).
As well, please check out the following tutorial for detailed instructions on signing into Google Classroom.

Last Week at SMGCS.....
Baptisms
Congratulations to 2nd Grade students, Andy R. and Lance K., who were baptized into the faith on Sunday, February 21, 2021!
Stations of the Cross
SMGCS students and faculty prayed The Stations of the Cross Tuesday.
The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church.
Alleluia Banners
During Wednesday's Mass, students laid their Alleluia Banners on the alter. They will be "buried" until Easter.
The omission of alleluia during Lent goes back at least to the fifth century in the western church. The association of alleluia with Easter led to the custom of intentionally omitting it from the liturgy during the season of Lent, a kind of verbal fast which has the effect of creating a sense of anticipation and even greater joy when the familiar word of praise returns. We do not use it at church. We do not use it at home. We let it rest, as it were, during Lent, so that when it reappears on Easter, we may hear it anew. In fact, once it returns on Easter, we give it no rest at all, repeating it again and again, in celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. The custom of actually bidding it farewell developed in the Middle Ages in Babylon. Many churches embrace the practice of physically "burying" the alleluia. This ritual practice is especially delightful and meaningful for children. https://www.epicenter.org/why-do-we-bury-the-alleluia/
Soccer Club
The K - 4th Grade Soccer Club was finally able to get their game in last Thursday following the winter weather we had during the previous two weeks!
Second Grade: First Reconciliation
Second Grade had their first reconciliation Friday followed by a reception with their parents. Many thanks to the 3rd grade class who wrote letters of encouragement to SMGCS 2nd grade students.
Thank You, Marquez Bakery!
A huge thank you to Marquez Bakery Arlington, for providing these beautiful and delicious cupcakes for our 2nd Grade students as they celebrated their First Reconciliation today.
Confessions
The Catholic Church teaches that sacramental confession requires three "acts" on the part of the penitent: contrition (sorrow of the soul for the sins committed), disclosure of the sins (the 'confession'), and satisfaction (the 'penance', i.e. doing something to make amends for the sins).
Sixth through eighth grade students attended confessions Friday. Third through fifth grade students are scheduled for confession on Monday, March 1st.
Regina Caeli
The school will be singing "Regina Caeli" in Latin during Eastertide in place of the Angelus. "The Regina Caeli is one of four antiphons (short liturgical texts sung or chanted, often in a responsorial pattern) dedicated to Our Lady. It is often sung as a hymn and has had numerous musical settings in its original Latin text, including several by Mozart. Traditionally, it is prayed standing, often at noon, in place of another well-known prayer, the Angelus, during the Easter Season from Holy Saturday until Pentecost." You may see it also spelled 'Regina Coeli', but it is spelled 'Caeli' in our hymnal so that is what we will use.
