From the Desk of the High School Principal-Mr. Tom Roote
By the time you read this we will likely be nearing day 14 of our school closure. We miss your children; our schools are not the same without their joy and positive energy. It has been a surreal stretch for all of us. We have seen courageous moments from students, staff and community members as we are rallying around each other during these uncertain times. As I type I see Mr. Russell Harris and others sharing meals with families! We are in this together, and we understand that there is a lot to process. Our intentions are to keep students active, engaged, and healthy; not overwhelm them or you.
We are here for you. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our building departments if you have any questions about learning or the closure in general. Call us at 315-332-3240 or e-mail hsmainoffice@newarkcsd.org. Both of these communication channels are monitored 2-3 times per hour from 7:30-3:00 pm weekday's. To date, we have attempted to tackle close to seventy five challenges communicated via one of these lines.
Recapping our situation:
- Upon learning of the need to close Newark High School, I worked with staff to set in motion plans to help students and families manage the crisis and stay connected to learning that has already been delivered. We call this the preservation of learning and this time period began on March 16 and continues today. Key moments: (1) A hard clean of the building (2) Food preparation and delivery. (3) The "New York State on Pause" Executive Order that was recently extended. (4) Fully implementing a remote staffing model (5) Engaging students remotely to set up the framework for feedback loops.
- This week, since facing the extended closure news from the Governor, " [...] all schools will be closed through at least April 15." , we have shifted our focus from the preservation of learning to the learning that is required for students to be considered a course completer. We are considering this with a close eye on the barriers our student may be facing in the social and emotional realms. Key moments: (1) The development of a home instruction guide that will serve as a road map critical for navigating the remote environment we will transition into. (2) The preparation of teachers to engage in routines that maximize home instruction (3) The analysis of issues from student to student. That is to say we look at groups of students in order to inform a closer look at individual students. We are starting with students failing to engage any or few of their teachers "bids" to connect.

Mash Up
Governor Cuomo, "Today, [3-29-2020] I extended our 'New York on PAUSE' policy until April 15th. That means non-essential businesses and schools will continue to stay closed. Gatherings of any size for any reason remain canceled and all New Yorkers continue to be directed to practice social distancing — by staying home and keeping six feet of space from others when in public. Stay Informed: Get nightly updates from New York State with the latest news on our response to the pandemic by signing up here."
I am afraid that I don't have good information to share on the Capstone Day for seniors, the Academic Awards Ceremony and Graduation. For the time being, we are moving forward with planning these events, with an eye on flexibility should they occur remotely.

Social Emotional Learning and the Plan for Excellence
Many school's across the State are moving from the preservation of learning to new instruction for the purposes of producing course completers and applying course credits to transcripts. Here is the Newark Central School District 's approach to this work. This is a must read!
