Greetings La Ballona Families!

It's almost October, and I can feel the shift. Parents are feeling more confident, students are becoming more independent, teachers are beginning to breathe again, and LB's principal is feeling grateful. Wow, everyone! We are pulling this off but it hasn't been easy. We miss the old days; yet, we are making distance learning work! May you spend your three days completely OFF SCREEN!

On Thursday and Friday, we have our typical Targeted Conference Days. The two days provide teachers a small bit of time to meet with parents. These conference days are not for everyone (those are in December), but instead are dedicated to families that may need a little bit more support.

On Thursday 10/1 and Friday 10/2, your students are dismissed at lunch time. They do not need to report to any Zoom classes. This includes small groups, Reading Intervention, Special Education groups, ELD, PE, Music, Art, and Makerspace. Also, no additional asynchronous activities will be pushed out to students. Our recommendation, but not requirement, is for students to use this time to complete any dangling tasks that have not been completed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Becky Godbey

Free and Reduced-price Meal Benefits

Each year, families are welcome to apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits. This year, we've been lucky so far, because our grab and go meals are free for all. But the grant funding will soon end. That is why it is very important for all families needing Free and Reduced-Price Meal benefits to apply or renew their application for continued benefits. You can apply online at www.culvercafe.org or you can pick up an application at any school front office and return it as soon as possible. Please call the office ahead of time at 310-842-4334 to make an appointment to pick up the application.

Please Join Our PTA

The La Ballona PTA needs you! Being a member of the PTA is one of the best ways a parent or guardian can be informed on what goes on at La Ballona Elementary School. Being a member also allows you to vote at all La Ballona Elementary PTA meetings. Be involved and have a say at what goes on at our school! Being a member does not require you to volunteer or attend meetings, but we always appreciate extra company! Please join our PTA!

Here are two ways to sign up.

La Ballona is forming a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee (Repeated)

In collaboration with our PTA, we are creating a DEI committee. We want a diverse group of parents, teachers, staff, community members to help us foster diversity and equality. Would you like to be involved? Please email the PTA President, Sonni Paisley, at President@LaBallonapta.org

Safe Route to Schools

Safe Route to Schools is organizing a challenge for all students to walk and bike more during Full Distance Learning. Pedometers will be issued to students in early October. Click here for more information: https://www.ccwalkandroll.com/overview

*Are you passionate about saving our Earth and Being Physically Healthy? If so, we need you! La Ballona needs a parent or two to coordinate our Safe Route to Schools Program. How fun to plan activities to encourage our students to walk more and to decrease traffic congestion. Email rebeccagodbey@ccusd.org if you'd like to be a school hero in this way!

Below are some fun color activities for your children.
