LEARNING/TEACHING CORNER....FROM TERRI MILLER'S DESK
Here is an overview of some of the pieces from our Guided Reading lesson plans that seem to have some confusions. Please come see me if you need more support with this. These are not necessarily in the order that should be taught.
Teaching points: After the students read the story, the teacher selects a few teaching points to highlight for the whole group. The teaching points are chosen from notes taken during the reading. After giving a running record, give that student a praise & a teaching point on what you saw that student doing independently.
Discussion prompt: The teacher asks the students a question to explore deeper comprehension.
Word study: It is important for students to gain phonemic awareness and learn how to decode words (i.e, decipher printed words by linking them to spoken words that the student already knows). During each lesson, the teacher shows students how to link letters to sounds, connect sounds to letters, and decode new words through three different word study activities: picture sorts, making words, and sound boxes. The activities help students learn to hear sounds in words. This is where you would look at your Spelling Inventory to see what focus skill each group needs. Come see me if they are all on different focus skills. We will come up with a plan for that group.
Teach one sight word: The teacher selects one sight word from the HFW Monitoring Checklist to teach to the students. She uses four procedures to help them learn the word: what is missing, mix and fix, write on the table, and write on a whiteboard.
For those students that are reading fluently: If readers read quickly and accurately but with no expression in their voices, if they place equal emphasis on every word and have no sense of phrasing, and if they ignore most punctuation, blowing through periods and other markers that indicate pauses, then it is unlikely that they will fully understand the text.
Passages meant to be read aloud as a performance--poetry, for example, or scripts, speeches, monologues, and dialogues--are perfect texts for developing fluency. One idea for students that are reading in advanced levels is to convert your classroom into poetry cafés and readers' theater festivals on Friday afternoons to give students the opportunity to perform the assigned texts that they have diligently practiced during the week.
Let me know how I can help support you with any of these pieces.

Don’t forget to visit your colleagues to see all the wonderful learning that goes on in our building! PT students rock! When you visit a classroom, please fill out a note card in my room with a positive comment on the learning that you observed. Remember, you will need to visit at least one classroom per quarter. Put the note card in the basket on top of my bookshelf so that I can mark your name off. Make sure that you put your name in the top left corner of the envelope so that I know who the card is from.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in your classroom.
You are MARVELOUS!
