Wiley News (Version espanol esta abajo)
What a fabulous start to the year! 1 week down, 35 to go! Please read on for some important Wiley Updates.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
We are so grateful to you. If the people make the place, we are ecstatic to call you our people! The Wiley staff enjoyed being treated like royalty on our staff kick-off with parent donated breakfast, a PTA sponsored lunch, and parent donated prizes to be used in classrooms. Your support means the world to us!
Masks:
Students continue to be required to wear masks at school and on communal transportation. Please send your child to school with a well-fitting mask that covers their nose, mouth, and chin and has at least two layers. Gauze masks or masks with ventilation valves do not meet the requirements outlined on the WCPSS website. The school will provide replacement masks as needed.
Electives: Electives for students in grades 1-5 will begin today, Monday, August 30th. While we get things up and rolling, we may need to make a few adjustments. If you have enrollment questions, please email Claire Sullivan at csullivan@wcpss.net. Kindergartners will rotate through specials with their class this week in order to get them acclimated to the building. Elective class lists for Kindergarten will be finalized by the end of the week and their elective classes will begin on Wednesday, September 8th.
Cafeteria Changes:
Some schedule adjustments were made so that only one grade level will be in the cafeteria at a time. Students will sit one seat apart, facing the same direction while eating. Outdoor eating continues to be an option during pleasant weather, so feel free to send your student to school with a beach towel.
Carpool: Carpool has been moving right along and we appreciate your patience. Please note, students are not allowed to be dropped off on the street. This presents safety hazards for your children and others. Remember that carpool enters from College Place and Saint Mary's Street (not Calvin St). Trying to enter that way causes disruptions to the called names. We promise to keep things moving and following the carpool expectations will help us make it a finely oiled machine.
Student Illness:
If a student is sent home with symptoms of covid, please follow the when to return guidance listed on the WCPSS website. Students may not return without a negative covid test, an alternate diagnosis, or before the assigned quarantine period. Students living in the same home as someone with covid must follow the quarantine guidance even if the student tests negative. Please send the appropriate documentation to the student's homeroom teacher before returning to school.
Quarantined?:
If a student is in quarantine, they may access school work from their google classroom. Completing this work will allow students to stay current with classwork. Teachers will offer office hours to field questions and check in once a week.
Buses:
Wowza! It's been a week. We continue to be so grateful for your patience and grace as pickups and dropoffs have been later than expected. We support our colleagues in the transportation department as they creatively problem-solve to address the driver shortage. If you are interested in learning about driving the coolest ride in town, WCPSS is still hiring drivers and offering a hefty signing bonus. Learn more here!
School Communication - If you are not receiving school communication or know of another family who is not, contact Leila Ruedy (lruedy@wcpss.net) with updated contact information. Locator cards not already completed at the Meet the Teacher event were sent home in Monday folders. Please return those ASAP.
Stay Connected- Check the school website for announcements and upcoming events. Additionally, follow us on Twitter @wileyelementary or join the Wiley Facebook Group (note you must answer the joining questions to be allowed into the group).

Happy first day, families!
The Cecilia Rawlins Fund would like to thank our Wiley family for their support during the economic upheaval of the last two years. Due to the Covid crisis, the number of families in our Backpack Buddies program ($350 per child in partnership with Interfaith Food Shuttle) more than doubled. During this time our supporters at Wiley responded to the unprecedented needs with generous donations; allowing us to answer the uptick in requests for hunger relief, rental assistance, utility payments, medical expenses and so much more.
