Welcome back and Happy New Year!
It feels like Christmas was a long time ago as we are hurtling through January. The ironically named Spring Term has begun and the children are already producing work to be proud of.
We have recently launched a new 'Writer of the Week' award within school which the children are eager to achieve. The children get a certificate, a small treat and for the week get to have a golden quill trophy on their desk. I am looking forward to sharing lots of great work with you this term and really celebrating the efforts the children are putting in. Check social media for the week's chosen writers.
Parents evening is coming up so please remember to book your appointments. If you cannot make the dates please let us know and we can arrange another date or phone call appointment.
Remember to follow us on Instagram swinefleet_pr and join our school Facebook group.
Have a lovely weekend!
Look at what we have been Learning
Pearls
The end of Autumn 2 was so busy! We all enjoyed our visit to the ‘Pink Pig Farm’ where we met Father Christmas, decorated a gingerbread man, made reindeer food and went on a wildlife walk. On our walk we saw pigs, donkeys, goats, alpacas, ducks and turkeys. We were all very tired by the end of the day! Pearls enjoyed our Christmas party, we saw Father Christmas again too!
Welcome back to the Spring term. This term our theme is ‘Traditional Tales’ and we will be basing our learning on a different fairy story each week.
Last week our focus was ‘The Three Little Pigs’ . We read the story together and joined in the repeating parts. We have been looking closely at different materials and finding out which one would make the best house. In our provision, we have been making houses and buildings with our construction blocks and designing houses in our creative area. In maths we have been counting, finding one more and one less than a given number. We have also been starting to double numbers.
This week we read ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ . We have enjoyed making story maps and saying what we like or don’t like about a story or a character’s actions in a story. In our provision we have been retelling the story (with props) and making a ‘Get Well Soon’ card for Grandma. In maths we have been adding amounts together and we are starting to write our own addition sentences (eg. 5 + 2 = 7) This week Mrs Beadle has visited us, and she has been showing us how to make ice decorations with natural materials and we have hung these in our outside area.
Rubies
Welcome back Rubies! We've had a great start to the New Year with Mrs Thurlow joining the Rubies team.
This term we are looking at Toys, how toys are made, toys from around the World and the history of them. So far, the children have looked at modern day toys and spoken about their favourite toy and brought photographs into school for a show and tell lesson. We've explored what materials modern day toys are made from and what type of toy they are. This week we have looked at toys from the past and how they differ from modern day toys.
In English, we have been reading the story of Pinocchio, identifying unfamiliar vocabulary and finding out the meaning of words. We've learnt about the suffix ending of Uncle Ed and when to add -ed to the end of a word all in preparation for writing a diary entry as Pinocchio.
In maths, we are concentrating on shapes looking at 2D shapes and their properties and lines of symmetry. We've been on a shape hunt around the classroom and used straws to build the different 2D shapes.
Diamonds
Unfortunately Miss Chiswell is off at the moment though we hope she will be back soon.
The Diamonds have made a great start to the term and are learning all about the Romans. They have begun writing diary entries and Mr George (our supply teacher) is very impressed with their efforts and is really looking forward to working with them again next week.
In maths, the children have mastered multiplication and division and are applying their learning of all four operations to problem solving.
The children have been having a big push on handwriting and we are staggered by the progress we have seen. Keep an eye out on our social media for examples and for pictures of this in future newsletters.
Sapphires
What a busy first two weeks back! We kick started our history work on Ancient Greece with some Greek food tasting. The pitta breads were the favourite for most children and there was a mixed response on the olives. The Sapphires have used books and technology to research secondary resources regarding Ancient Greece – they were surprised by some of their findings. The children are already gripped by our class novel – Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Each chapter seems to be a new adventure for him. This has linked in well with our defeat the monster stories. We have watched and read Odysseus’ encounter with the Cyclops and have used this as inspiration for our narratives. Who will win Miss Bish’s writing award on Friday!?
In Maths, the Sapphires have shown such determination and resilience in multiplying and dividing decimals. They have worked with partners and there has been lots of peer learning. In Science, children have started to learn about the human circulation system including creating a drama on the parts of the heart. In Art, the Sapphires have evaluated Greek pottery and started to design their own. Microbits have been introduced into our computing lessons and it was wonderful to see the children engaged in their learning and so enthusiastic to master something new. We’ve had lots of interesting discussions in RE over who inspires and influences us and why. Thank you to Mrs Beadle for taking the Sapphires to build bird feeders – they really enjoyed the experience.
This week, the Year 6 children have received their SATs packs and booster clubs have started in school. Thank you parents for your support with this. Please remember to keep posting on seesaw, practising spellings and accessing timestable rockstars.
Finally last Friday was a mixture of emotions for us all. We were all very sad to see one of our Sapphire’s pupils leave to move to Poland. She will be very much missed by us all and we made sure she had the best party and send off.
Supporting your child
You should have all received an update of your current child's progress and attainment and target areas for this term. If you would like any additional resources or activities to support your child further at home then please just let your child's teaching team know and we will be happy to provide these.
Medium term plans and knowledge organisers showing what your child will be learning this term are on class pages on our school website and have been sent via Tapestry/ Seesaw. If you would like paper copies of these please just let us know.
Clubs
Please click the button below to book extra-curricular clubs for both after school and lunchtimes. All clubs are free including those run by professional sports coaches and these will run for this full term.
In case you missed it...
A huge thank you for your support with the Angel Tree and our school Christmas Fair.
We were so lucky to have the Humberside Santa Bus visit us on our last day and if you haven't heard the broadcast you can listen by clicking the button below (TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO DO THIS)
Parental Involvement - Coffee Afternoon
We are hoping to relaunch our Friends Of Swinefleet Primary School group again and are holding a coffee afternoon where people who are interested in forming or joining a group to support the school through events and fundraising can come to meet together. Please join us as we would love to get the group going again (if you are unable to attend please let us know if you will still be interested in forming or joining a group).
Coffee Afternoon
Come and find out about how you can join other parents and staff in forming a group to support the school in fundraising and arranging events.
Join us: 2:30pm February 8th 2024
If you haven't already filled in the survey please do if you have ideas of how we can improve parental involvement.
We have a number of events for parents/families planned in the background but would love to know more about the types of parent events you would like to see us include. We have created a very brief survey to get your opinion on our ideas and there is also the opportunity to share your ideas with us. The survey will take no more than a couple of minutes and can be accessed using the button below.
Our Mums, Dads and Grandparents to lunch events will take place again this year (see the Diary Dates section further below).
Reading Reward
The levels for reading are:
Bronze - 12 reads
Silver - 16 reads
Gold - 20 reads
Reading clubs are worth 3 reads and can be booked through the club link in this newsletter for lunchtime and/or after school.
Reads ideally should be logged on Tapestry or Seesaw so please contact a member of your child's teaching team if having difficulties and they will be happy to help. If your child is younger sharing a story with them counts as a read this means that it is accessible to all.
If you have any issues with Seesaw or Tapestry then please see a member of your child's teaching team.
P.E
Please ensure that P.E kit is in school all week.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Drop-Ins
If you would like to speak to Mrs Thurlow regarding any SEND needs then she is available every Tuesday morning and will be visible on the playground. Please also feel free to speak to your child's teaching team.
Attendance and why it is Important
Below are some leaflets explaining the importance of school attendance. There is some advice to support high attendance and staff are always willing to help so please speak to us should you need any help.
If your child is off school staff will ensure that any work is kept for them and then can be sent home so that they do not fall behind.
Please ensure that you let us know if your child is unwell so that we can record this as authorised.

School Places
If you have friends or family who are wanting a place at the school either now or in the future then please encourage them to contact us via email or over the phone. This is especially important if they will want places as a 2-Year Old or in our Nursery or Reception as places for next year are now limited.
