OLVCS Updates
September 30, 2022
Dear OLV Parents and Friends,
Our Lady of Victory’s feast day is next Friday. One year after the Christian Armada defeated the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto, Pope Pius V commemorated this feast day on October 7, 1572. The feast day has had several names since then, finally becoming “Our Lady of the Rosary” in 1969. The Mysteries of the Rosary are a powerful meditation on the life and power of Christ, and our school will be praying this prayer together on October 14th and 21st (times to be announced).
OLV Day is also our Walk-A-Thon Day and I ‘d like to thank all the families, friends, and businesses who have contributed already! Our students have been generous, too. Thanks to the contributions of our students during our Dollar Dress Down Day and coin collection, we raised over $3,000 for our school. We are truly grateful and humbled by the generosity of all of you.
As October arrives and cooler weather takes over, please refer to our uniform requirements and out-of-uniform requirements: https://www.olvcatholicschool.org/Page/438. Shorts should not be worn between October 15 and April 15.
Thanks again, God bless, and have a nice weekend!
Warm regards,
Jim Hoy

The Crusaders put on a defensive clinic and were rewarded for their efforts with goals from Lucas Starks and Collin Jacob. Next up, The Dubois Central Catholic Tournament on Saturday.
Crusaders Split with Rockets
On Monday our girls volleyball team traveled to Three Springs for a re-match with the Southern Huntington Rockets. In both sets of the 8th grade game, there were lots of great volleys, demonstrating the growth of our 8th grade team in both teamwork and skill. Despite improved serving by the Crusaders, our team fell in two sets: 17 to 25 and 19 to 25.
Following the 8th grade game, the 7th grade team took the court. With 6 aces by Vale Kauffman in the first set, and 3 aces a piece by Vale Kauffman and Ellie Posner in the second set, the 7th grade team took home the win in two sets: 25 to 16 and 26 to 24.
This weekend, the team will be competing in the Warrior Blast Junior High Tournament at West Branch High School. This event includes teams from 12 area schools.
Our volleyball team will have their last game of the season on Wednesday, October 5th at 4PM. The game will be at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy. All are invited to come out for middle school great volleyball action and to honor our 8th grade players.
Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy Updates
Koshko and Peters Win District VI Golf Championships
On Tuesday Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy Senior, Timothy Peters, won the PIAA District VI Class AA Boys Golf Individual Championship with a score of 77 at Scotch Valley Country Club.
A few days later on Thursday, SJCA Freshman, Maddie Koshko, won the PIAA District VI Girls Golf Individual Championship with a score of 73 at Ebensburg Country Club. Both Maddie and Timothy are alumni of Our Lady of Victory Catholic School.
This is Timothy’s second District IV Boys Golf Individual Championship title. He also won the title last year. He also placed 6th in the PIAA State tournament in 2021.
Both Timothy and Maddie will go on to play in the 2022 PIAA State Championships, scheduled for the week of October 17th. The event will be played at the PSU Golf Courses.
Saint Joe’s Soccer Playing Strong As The Team Heads Into Last Weeks Of Regular Season
With strong wins against Mount Union, Susquenita, and Halifax High Schools the Saint Joseph’s Soccer team is heading into the final weeks of the regular season. The team is currently 6 and 7 for the season and 4 and 6 in league play. The team competes against all boys teams in the Tri-Valley Athletic League.
There are 19 boys and 2 girls who play on the SJCA team. “We have everyone from club players to people who have never played,” said Senior Akio Ohmoto who plays right back. “We still come together to make a team that does fairly well.”
Melvin Anaya is the head coach of the SJCA team. “He is very good at figuring out who we have and where they should play to bring the best out of us,” said Senior center defender Spencer Gigante.
While soccer is a “fall sport,” that doesn’t mean team members wait until fall to begin practicing. “Over the summer, we had weekly practices once a week where we mainly focused on fundamentals,” said Ohmoto. “This ended up helping a lot and I think these drills are the main reason why we ended up winning.”
Check out sjcasports.org for a list of upcoming games for the soccer team and all the Fall teams at Saint Joseph’s. Home soccer games are held at the field behind the school.
