Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week!
October 30, 2017
MATH:
2.1 - This week our students will be begin the second unit. They will demonstrate how to count mixed combinations of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. They will also learn how to write amounts of money using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
2.2 - Students have done amazing with geometry. We've been partitioning rectangles and circles into equal pieces and representing the shaded parts of circles with fractions. Remember to have your student complete 30-minutes of RedBird each week. They access RedBird through Launch Pad using their lunch number and 8-digit birthdate. RedBird gives students a placement test the first time they log in to determine where they need to begin working. The program will guide them through lessons, assess and remediate on its own. Please do not help your student answer questions. If they don't know how to solve a problem, the system will reteach. If you need any help logging in, please let me know.
3.1 - The students are continuing the second math unit. This week students will use arrays to demonstrate their understanding of multiplication as objects in groups. For example, they will interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. They will also learn how repeated addition relates to arrays and multiplication facts.
READING:
This week we are continuing our nonfiction reading unit. The students have a variety of nonfiction books they are using to discover a new way to connect to reading. They are exploring familiar and unfamiliar topics. They are learning to develop questions and notice details found in texts. They are also learning to read with a voice that matches the content and are developing vocabulary usage and understanding. They are also beginning to compare and contrast information inside and across texts.
WRITING:
In our nonfiction writing unit the students have the opportunity to write A LOT of nonfiction books! They are learning to write with purpose as they consider the specific information their audience will need to know. They are also learning to make choices about how to shape their information and are deciding what kind of books to make. The students are provided with many opportunities for elaboration and revision as craft their nonfiction texts!
SCIENCE:
We are wrapping up our second science unit this week. The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the forces of motion on our performance assessment called Force Me to Move! Students will design an experiment to test how the amount of force changes the motion of an object.
Red Ribbon Week
WHAT IS RED RIBBON WEEK?
It is a way for students to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse. Students show their personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon.
Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated this year on
October 30th to November 3rd
Our theme this year is: "Don't get caught in the web of drugs!"
This week students at Crabapple Crossing Elementary School will join children across the nation in taking part in Red Ribbon Week activities.
Here is how we are celebrating....
Monday, Oct. 30...”RED”-Y to live a drug-free life! Wear red today.
Tuesday, Oct. 31...Book Character day! Dress up like your favorite book character.
Wednesday, Nov. 1...Don’t be tricked, drugs keep you out of the game! Wear your favorite sports team clothing.
Thursday, Nov. 2...Don’t get tied down with drugs! Wear tie dye.
Friday, Nov. 3...I’m too bright for Drugs! Wear your GLO for it shirt and other brightly-colored gear.
Help us be...NUT FREE!
Glo For It!
A BIG THANKS to all of our families who helped their children raise donations for our fundraiser! You surpassed our goal and raised over $109,000 for our school and students! On November 3rd we will have a school-wide celebration during the day. Students will get their prizes, have a parade, games and a gym party. (And yes, trinkets will glow at the dance because the gym is very dark without lights on).
This celebration will have a similar format as Field day which is a wonderful event and a favorite of our children. By doing it during the day, every single student will be able to attend the celebration - we are so excited for this!!
