Zero Period Elective

Many parents have expressed that they would like their student to be able to have a second elective. This is not possible during the school day because we don’t have the staffing allocation to do this. So instead we are thinking about offering a zero period elective twice per week next year starting at 7:30 am. We don’t want to do this everyday because we want students to be able to sleep. We have a number of students already attending clubs in the morning at this time this year, so we think this is a feasible option. We considered after school, but this gets tricky with sports, music, tutoring, and other after school commitments. Please think about this idea over the next week and talk to your student about this idea. Next week I will include a link to a survey so that we can get an idea of the demand since I already having to commit to a master schedule and staffing decisions for next school year soon.

Save the date for our next dance, which is Friday, March 1, from 6-8 pm. As a heads up, and this will be communicated to students next week, students with any referrals in the month of February starting on Monday will not be eligible to attend.

Online Safety and Bullying

We had great assemblies and a parent presentation this past Thursday. Attached below are some resources. We are working on getting them translated to Spanish. Below is also a picture of one of the slides about how to anonymously report online predators.

ELPAC Testing

Our students who have not been re-designated as English proficient will begin ELPAC testing this week. This week they will complete the speaking portion of the test. The District sends people out to complete this part with our students. The remainder of the test will be administered by Kennedy staff. Next week I will provide the testing schedule for the remainder of the testing.

Principal's Coffee

We look forward to seeing you this Thursday at 8:30 am in the library. We will do a review of how to access the CPM (College Prep Math) resources and then we will work through and score a sample math task like the students took last year and will take again this year to determine math placement. We will conclude by visiting classrooms.

High School Math Placements

We received students’ high school math placement scores this week. Teachers will be putting these in PowerSchool as non-weighted grades. Below is the placement chart from the Sequoia Union High School District. Those who did not score highly will take a follow up test this week.

Accelerated Math For Next Year

All sixth and seventh grade students will be taking a math test like last year in the spring (probably March or April) to confirm placement for next year. There will be a multiple choice part on the computer and a written part where they show their thinking. Once I have more information about dates I will share this information. For those who qualify and are in grade level math this year, there will be work over the summer to fill in some gaps from the instruction they didn’t receive this year.

Students who are currently in grade level math and want some more challenging work and lessons will have the opportunity to work with me starting in February through April. (For those of you who don’t know, I was a middle school math teacher in Cupertino). I will provide dates and times in the next two weeks. Some of the material has to stay in the classroom so students will have to attend in person to do that work. Other work and projects can be done outside of our meeting time.

Perfume, Cologne, Deodorant Sprays

A reminder that spray perfume, cologne, and deodorant sprays, as well as aerosol cans, are not permitted on campus. They can cause a safety hazard.
