Summer Reading Programs
Beat the "Summer Slide"
Research shows that children who do not read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress. That loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. Summer Reading Programs can help motivate children, especially if the incentives result in freebies!
Reading Programs Available In Your area:
Children of all ages -- readers and listeners -- are invited to join the Mayor's Summer Reading Club beginning Wednesday, June 1. By keeping track of the books they read (or listen to) children can earn a Summer Reading Certificate signed by Mayor Taylor and can select a free paperback book to keep!
The Twig Summer Reading Program
Twiglets Summer Reading Kick Off with Spot! This FREE children's event includes a LIVE Miss Anastasia Costume Character, Storytime , good old-fashioned crafts, and a simple snack!
Similar to the SAPL program, Barnes and Noble’s Imagination’s Destination Summer Reading Program is free. Participants read at least eight books and fill out the reading journal. Take the completed journal to your nearest Barnes and Noble to receive a free book.
This June, July, and August read 15 minutes a day, (grown-ups may read aloud to kids who are still learning,) fill out the reading log, add up your minutes and have your parent or guardian initial each week. Once you’ve reached 300 or more minutes, bring your log to your local HPB to claim your Bookworm Bucks. Reading logs are due no later than Thursday, September 1.
Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
This reading challenge is a free online reading program for children. Registration began May 4 and ends September 4. Kids can log in, record minutes, and unlock rewards.
Read 10 books and fill out the HEB reading log, each book read initialed by an adult. Once the log is complete, mail it to the address found on the webpage, and receive a free t-shirt!
Kids can earn 10 free tokens by reading each day for two weeks.
