The conch symbolizes the need for Law and Order

this quote is talking about how they will use the conch to call the others, and form they're first civilization


Ralph waved the conch.
"Shut up! Wait! Listen!"
He went on in the silence, borne on in his triumph.

This quote means that whoever has the conch has the right to talk, they show they're civilized behavior by taking turns talking, and basically raising they're hands with the conch.


Shut up," said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things."

"A chief! A chief!"

"I ought to be chief," said Jack with simple arrogance, "because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp."


Ralph had the conch, so he got to bring up the idea about voting for a cheif, and Ralph was elected chief, because he had the Conch shell in the beginning, so everybody saw him as a hero
