Beginning-of-Year Reading Assessments
Your child’s Beginning-of-Year DIBELS assessment report has been sent home. Below is an example of the report. Please keep in mind that the assessments were given in early September and communicate your child’s literacy skills BEFORE targeted classroom instruction had been provided. As a building, we have already seen progress with these skills.
The DIBELS assessments are conducted three times each year (at the beginning, middle, and end-of-year) to determine student progress in relation to basic early literacy skills. The assessments consist of several timed one-minute measures and assess skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, word identification, fluency, and comprehension. There are different measures for each grade level, and the report you received details the specific assessment pieces your child completed. Additionally, on the back of the report, you will see activities that your child can do at home to help strengthen early literacy skills.
The information we gather from our students’ performance on the assessments helps to drive our classroom instruction and helps us in providing appropriate instructional supports for our students.
If you have any questions about your child’s DIBELS report, please reach out to Mrs. Smith at msmith@qcsd.org or Ms. Haegele at ehaegele@qcsd.org. If you have questions about your child’s classroom instruction, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
