From the desk of our Proud Principal

Bunker Hill Families,

I’ve had the tremendous honor to serve as the Proud Principal at Bunker Hill Elementary School for the past 7 years. During this time, I’ve had the pleasure to work and learn from skilled educators and leaders. Together, we’ve witnessed the amazing growth of our students and have exceeded our own goals. We’ve gone from only slightly over 65% of our students passing the minimum requirements on ISTEP+ in 2009 up to 91.5% of our students passing the same assessment in 2014. Our staff has worked tirelessly during this time to focus their efforts on student growth, which will continue over time. Because of the passionate, dedicated, hardworking students, families and staff members, the bulldog family has touched my heart.

Recently I made the difficult decision to accept a new position in Franklin Township. In January I will begin serving in the capacity of Principal at Acton Elementary School. The reopening of Acton Elementary will be an exciting adventure for me personally and professionally. My goal is to create an equally responsive, loving, and high achieving school climate at Acton, when we open our doors in July. There is ample work to be done and I’m excited to take on this new challenge.

I am most proud of the relationships I was able to foster and develop over the years with our students and all of our wonderful families. Bunker Hill is a magical place for everyone and it will be something that I will always treasure as a cornerstone in my development as a building leader. It is with a heavy heart that I say good-bye to all of those who have meant so much to me. I will miss seeing the children coming into the school with wide smiles on their faces as they experience the joy of learning at Bunker Hill. I wish all the best to the Bunker Hill families, students and staff. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers for many years to come.

Mrs. Pickett's Counselor Corner

In November we hosted a food drive that benefited the Franklin Township Civic League, SPARC center, and the American Indian Center of Indianapolis! We collected over 5100 cans and non perishable items.

WOW!!! We were totally blown away by the giving spirit of our Bunker Hill Bulldogs!

To encourage participation, we rewarded the class that brought in the most items with a KONA Ice party! The winning class was Mrs. Kiel's class with 763 cans! We also allowed participating students to wear slippers during the school day on our last day of collection.

Student of the Month

This year we've decided to update our Student of the Month Awards. We wanted to tie in our monthly core essentials curriculum with our student of the month program. We will be spotlighting one student per classroom that has displayed the core essentials trait. For November the trait we’ve discussed is Service. Classrooms read a Dr. Seuss book that portrays the month’s trait and then teachers chose one student from their class that demonstrated that trait. Below is a list of the monthly traits along with a link to a reading of the Dr. Seuss book that correlates.

September: Initiative Horton Hatches The Egg

October: Individuality Happy Birthday to You

November: Service Thidwick The Kindhearted Moose

December: Compassion How the Grinch Stole Christmas

January: Self Control My Many Colored Days

February: Cooperation The Cat in the Hat

March: Hope The Lorax

Apil: Friendship Horton Hears a Who

May: Contentment Yertle The Turtle

Student of the Month lists are available on our website.

Winter Weather

We are creeping closer and closer to winter weather. Therefore we must ensure our students are safely clothed for bus stops and recess. Hats, coats, gloves and boots are important for students to have daily. If your family is having difficulty providing those items, please contact Mrs. Pickett for assistance.

We also want to ensure the safety of our students when heading to their bus stops. Please shovel snow in your driveways and sidewalks so students can safely get to and stand in their designated bus stop locations. If Home Owners Associations contract out the snow removal for your neighborhood, please request that the plow trucks NOT pile up snow at corners used for bus stops. This could greatly decrease the risk of student injuries while waiting for their buses.

Project Linus

The 5th and 1st grade classrooms have teamed up to be volunteer “blanketeers”. We will be collecting donations for Project Linus. We will be providing a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets.

Our pajama day raised $500 for Project Linus. Thank you families for your support!

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. If you requested a paper copy, the newsletter will come home with your student. The newsletter will also be available on our website http://www.ftcsc.k12.in.us/bunker-hill or our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families. Please No Fast Food!
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Clinic Reminders

  • Vision Screening referrals will be sent home soon. If your child receives a referral please make an appointment with an eye doctor as soon as possible and return referral paperwork to Mrs. Knox.
  • The flu season is upon us. Please remind your child to practice good hand washing skills. Students also need to practice coughing and sneezing into their elbow.
  • The clinic is in need of clothing and underwear for boys. Sizes most needed are 5 and 6.
  • If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or has a fever they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Please return any medical paperwork as soon as possible.
  • All medications must be brought in by parent or guardian to school.

Library News

Students are now checking out books from the library. Enjoy spending time asking them about their book or reading it with them.

Please help your student remember that books are due the day before their library day. This allows time for books to get checked in.
