Week of 3/5/18 - 3/9/18
Letter from Principal Nelson
We want to thank all the parents/guardians and extended family members out there who emailed or called the office this week inquiring about safety here on campus. We have no problem sharing what we are doing and will always invite tips or advice to improve. The conversations here on campus with staff have been ongoing and all departments are conducting internal audits looking for ways to ensure the safety of everyone. We’ve made sure our students are aware we need their help as well in regards to not opening doors for non-staff and to direct all outside visitors to the main office for to check in. If we all work together and follow AISD’s directive of “if you see something, say something” we can continue to keep Small a safe place for students to flourish.
Click the link below to read an informative article about our Green Tech Program and one of our Environmental Science Teachers Chris Brooks. The piece has dozens of pictures of our Green Space and showcases our students, chickens, ducks, and 2 newest inhabitants: Adonis and Blackjack, our sheep. We already know how fantastic teachers Chris and his Green Gurus (Maia Chambers, Nate Rosenberg, and Justin Fyffe) are, but it’s also nice to receive acclaim from our partners in the City of Austin. We’re beyond proud of our students, our teachers, and the fact that other schools are replicating our awesomeness.
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony:
With the size of this year’s 8th grade class and the lack of seating to accommodate all members of extended families, as well as the state of our bleachers in question, the School Leadership Team and administration has decided not to have a 8th grade promotion ceremony this year. We are following the path of similar large Middle Schools in AISD and instead offering various, more intimate celebrations to recognize our 8th grade students prior to the last day of school. Rest assured, our 8th grade students will still have their annual trip to Schlitterbahn, the last day of school celebration, and their Donut Social and catered lunch on the last day as well. Our goal is to celebrate and acknowledge the years we’ve had with our 8th graders and wish them the best as they head off to high school in a safe, inclusive manner.
Looking forward to seeing as many parent/guardians as possible Saturday afternoon for the “Where’s Mr. Nelson?” clue game here on campus. We support any event that gets kids and adults working together for a common good and this one will surely test everyone's code-breaking and trivia question expertise. The best part is, regardless of where your team finishes, everybody gets a sundae on a Saturday.
