Quality and Community
Pomona Families and Community
Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready for the second semester! One thing I know I am thankful for is the fact that you all have trusted us at Pomona to teach, grow, and develop your children. At Pomona, we realize what a privilege it is to serve this community and work with your students.
One of the best parts about working at Pomona is to see a community gather together and support one another. In November, our community raised over $11,500 by participating in the sales of Panther cards. These funds will provide much needed support for maintaining our current technology infrastructure and will also go towards purchasing new technology devices and accessories. So far, we have used a portion of these funds to purchase sets of high quality earphones for each grade level to use with their iPads. We will keep you updated as this money is utilized. Our student council also sponsored a canned food drive to provide meals and food to families in need this holiday season. These are great opportunities for our students to learn about service, community and generosity.
Once again, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season as we lead in to the New Year! The next couple of months will be busy at Pomona Elementary. Please check out our online calendar for school information including upcoming events: http://pes.mcsd.org/calendar . Upcoming events for January include Kids' Heart Challenge on 1/14/19 (formerly Jumprope for Heart) and Donuts for Dads on 1/25/19.
Problem Based Learning (PBL) at Pomona
We are so proud of our 1st Grade students! Last month they jumped into their first PBL (Problem Based Learning) project and focused on how they can focus on healthy choices to improve school attendance in first grade. Other grade levels are jumping into their projects this semester. It is awesome to see our students engage in these authentic problem solving and learning activities.

Our next PAWS assembly will be at the end of the 3rd Quarter.

STARS Listening
As a team at Pomona, we are focused on growing and improvement. This year, our two main goals are to develop a positive school culture and improve and align our classroom instruction.
In our efforts to improve school culture, all classrooms are working hard to implement common classroom practices including STARS listening. STARS is an acronym (yes, another acronym) to teach students what it means to truly engage and actively listen:
S - Sit Up
T - Track the Speaker
A - Ask and Answer Scholarly Questions
R - Respect Eachother
S - Smile
