Benton Weekly Update

Week 2: August 24-28, 2020

Back to School Night is Tuesday 8/25 @ 5:15pm

Welcome to Week 2 of School! We hope you and your student have begun to settle in to the routine of Distance Learning. This is new for all of us, and we continue to find things to be improved and corrected. Thank you all for your patience as we work through this together!

Benton is excited to host its first VIRTUAL Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 25th. The evening begins with a greeting from Principal Ben Webster and introduction of the staff at 5:15. Join here! Next, you will rotate through your student's schedule joining the individual teacher's zoom sessions. You will be emailed your child's schedule along with zoom links for each teacher.

Save the Date: Benton Business Days for getting ID cards, musical instruments, PE clothes, Art kits, textbook return & pick up, cleaning out PE lockers from 9am-2pm August 31 for 8th graders, Sept. 1 for 7th graders, and Sept. 3 for 6th graders.

Are you connected to your child on Schoology? Parents have the ability to sign up for Schoology and see assignments and their child's submissions for all classes. Information is being mailed home on how to access your child's Schoology account.

Are you connected to the ParentPortal in PowerSchool? Schoology is the app for student assignments, but all graded work appears in the Parent Portal. If you have older children on your ParentPortal account, you just need an access code and password to add additional students. Email Ms. Ridgeway if you need help setting up a ParentPortal account or adding another child to your existing account. rridgeway@nlmusd.org

Feeling confusion about Wednesdays? Confusion about the schedule in general? Here's the scoop:

A Days are Mondays & Thursdays, B Days are Tuesdays & Fridays. On Wednesdays, students meet for only one period. Each Wednesday cycles through a different period so by the end of the 1st Semester, each class will have met two times on a Wednesday. If this is still confusing, the calendar on the Benton website has been updated and displays the schedule. www.bentonms.org

We look forward to honoring Students of the Month in this weekly newsletter, but for the time being, teachers of the week are featured below (the staff needs a little love, too, as they navigate Distance Learning!)

Attendance Concerns: To be counted "present", your child needs to attend the teachers' Zoom sessions. Some teachers use a Google document on which students enter their names for attendance, but all teachers have asked students to change their Zoom screens to display LAST NAME, FIRST NAME. This is vitally important as teachers then "capture" this data in order to take and verify attendance. Remind your children that while it may be amusing to have "Bill Gates" or "Sponge Bob" join a Zoom, the real student will be marked absent. If you are having connectivity issues, please message the teacher (preferred) or call the office to document that your child attempted to join the synchronous learning session, then have them complete and submit asynchronous school work that same day. If you do that, your child will not be marked absent.

You can meet and chat with the Principal Ben Webster and the Asst. Principal Robin Ridgeway on Tuesday mornings from 8am-8:30am. If you have questions specific to your child, please contact us directly at bwebster@nlmusd.org and rridgeway@nlmusd.org
