Self-Awareness Instruction: Green and Blue Zones
During class meetings we have been discussing the Zones of Regulation. Our students have learned what is looks like, sounds like and feels like to be in the green and blue zones.
Zones of Regulation states that:
The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs. The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.
The Zones can be compared to traffic signs. When given a green light or in the Green Zone, one is “good to go”. A yellow sign means be aware or take caution, which applies to the Yellow Zone. A red light or stop sign means stop, and when one is the Red Zone this often is the case. The Blue Zone can be compared to the rest area signs where one goes to rest or re-energize. All of the zones are natural to experience, but the framework focuses on teaching students how to recognize and manage their Zone based on the environment and its demands and the people around them.
Small Group Instruction
Small-group instruction is a learning experience in which the teacher supports and guides the students with content on their instructional level. The teacher helps students develop an understanding of the content while prompting them to apply strategies they will need to become independent thinkers. Each small-group consists of approximately five to six students. This small-group setting allows the teacher to introduce and practice concepts each day and to ensure that high levels of learning occur for each student.
Small-group instruction is important because it enables teachers to observe students' academic behavior and provide support while they practice strategies for thinking and learning. During small-group instruction, students' abilities are matched to their instructional needs. This allows teachers to model specific academic behaviors and teach instructional strategies within context. It also provides opportunities for students to apply these strategies in order to demonstrate mastery through practice. Small group instruction is designed, by grade level teams, using formal and informal data.

Information from Nurse Johnson
Hi Miller Families,
Just a few quick reminder from the nurse!
- Flu Clinic will be here at Miller (library) on October 13th 2:30- 5:00pm
- When calling or emailing the front office regarding your child being absent due to illness, please let us know what signs and symptoms they are having. We track illness and report those illnesses to the county. This also allows us to send notifications out to parents when we see a cluster of illnesses. Thank you so much for your support in this matter.
- Please see the guidelines below for when to keep your child home from school. This is very important as we want to keep our school as healthy as possible and stop the spread of infection! Thank you for your cooperation!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Thank you!
