Volume 54: Keeping JLSD families informed

Thank you for choosing the Jackson Local School District to enroll your child! We are excited to work with you to make sure your child succeeds. Our goal at Jackson Local is to nurture and challenge our students so they become lifelong learners and confident leaders. We believe education is a partnership, and we know you are an expert when it comes to your child. We hope you will share your expertise with us. We look forward to standing alongside you and sharing your child’s success in the years ahead. Again, thank you for choosing Jackson Local.
INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION
There is a chance for inclement weather this week and throughout the rest of the winter months in Northeast Ohio. The Jackson Local School District first will inform parents via the Jackson Local School District app for iPhone and Android of school closures. The district also will send a robo-call, text message, and email of a school closure. Traditional media outlets (locally WHBC and the Canton Repository) as well as Cleveland news television stations will be informed of school closures. The Jackson Local website will be the first site updated with closing information as well.
For parents of children who may need childcare in the event school is closed, please begin to plan to have a trusted family member or friend provide care. Another option is to sign up in advance for childcare through the Paul & Carol David YMCA in Jackson Township. PLEASE NOTE: In order to utilize the YMCA childcare, you must complete registration in advance and have that on file with the David YMCA before using the service. You can find that information here or download the registration information right below.
Families utilizing Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services may be eligible for childcare assistance. You can find more information on the ODJFS website by touching or clicking here.
MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES TO HELP
The Jackson Local School District started an initiative this school year to share resources and tips with our parents. We are providing more resources from our district mental health partners. We hope you find value in these resources from our mental health experts.
JACKSON JA STUDENTS DEVELOP GAME
OPEER is a positive peer pressure card game that encourages students to step outside of their comfort zone and become closer with their classmates. The students can also learn more about each other and even find similar interests. As classes change and students move seats with the new 9 weeks ahead, it is more clear than ever that there is a need for a short game to help ease the social anxiety of sitting near new people. This game will ultimately make for a better classroom setting and why would you not want to have that for only $9.99?
Our game has physical and mental tasks that can be fun and students are encouraged to perform them. A physical card example is jumping jacks for 15 seconds and a mental card example is turning to your right and giving that person next to you a compliment. These simple tasks are made to raise self esteem and peers are encouraged to motivate the player whose turn it is to complete this task with a positive attitude. We hope you join us in our mission for making the world a better place through positive social experiences. Visit opeerja.com to get your cards now!

PARENT SOCIAL MEDIA, APP RESOURCES
Dear Jackson Local Parents,
The Jackson Local School District believes in partnering with our parents and providing them with resources to help navigate the world of technology, games, and social media. While advances in technology have many great rewards, there is also the potential for harm.
In addition to cyberbullying, there are concerns about safety, mental health, and wellness. It seems that every day another social media app or social media challenge becomes popular. In some cases, these apps allow strangers to contact children, or make it easy to anonymously bully other children. Or, the social media challenges pose great dangers to students’ or bystanders’ physical safety. In answer to these dangers, we have been looking for a resource that can help parents of our community learn the ins and outs of social media and online dangers, and the challenges of parenting in the digital age.
We are excited to announce that the Jackson Local School District has recently partnered with SmartSocial.com for its on-demand courses for parents and students. The SmartSocial resources cover a wide range of digital and social media topics. We are providing a parent subscription package to these resources to help you learn how to navigate the negative (and positive) parts of social media with your students.
You can sign up here: https://smartsocial.com/jacksonlocalschooldistrict
With more than 130 parent, educator, & student courses available on-demand, this resource promises to help bridge the gap between the ever-changing digital landscape and the very real need to guide our students.
Some of our courses include:
Smartphone and Social Media Agreement Class (For students, parents, & educators)
Navigating TikTok (A course for students, parents, & educators)
Navigating Instagram (A course for students, parents, & educators)
Navigating YouTube (A course for students, parents, & educators)
Navigating Snapchat (A course for students, parents, & educators)
Navigating Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty & Other Violent Video Games (A course for students & parents)
Navigating Roblox, Minecraft, & Other Non-Violent Video Games (A course for students & parents)
Navigating College Readiness on Social Media Networks (A course for students, parents, & educators)
As we all know, the digital footprint and the social media presence that young people create can have a lasting impact. Parental guidance, as well as guidance from trusted adults at school, are needed. For older students, we will begin the process of preparing for college and career and SmartSocial.com can help parents support their students in putting their best foot forward with social media and a digital portfolio.
Normally membership to the SmartSocial resources is $60-180/year. Jackson Local parents can now join the SmartSocial Membership for FREE. Our school’s membership gives each family access to the SmartSocial courses for free through the end of this school year. This is a unique opportunity to learn from experts in the social media space - from the comfort of your home or office.

JACKSON LOCAL SEEKS TO SERVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
Within the intent of the federal statutes (Rehabilitation Act of 1973-section 504 and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA-public law 105-17), the Jackson Local School District continues its effort to locate and identify children with disabilities from birth through age 21. Children with disabilities have physical, emotional, and or mental impairments that may require special education. Public schools provide free and appropriate education regardless of a child’s disability. However, before these children can be served, they must be found. Many of these children are not visible because they may not function in the community’s mainstream, and many are preschoolers. Parents may not realize that programs and services are available through their school district or from agencies in their community. If you are aware of a child who may need a special education program or services, contact Kathy Brand, Jackson Local School District’s Special Programs Director with any question you may have regarding the above notice at 330-830-8006.
