SOS- Signs of Suicide
The Signs of Suicide (SOS) prevention program encourages students to seek help if they are concerned about the mental health and wellbeing of themselves or a friend. By helping students to understand that depression is a treatable illness, explaining that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression, and providing students with training on how to identify and report serious depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend, the program proactively addresses the growing problems of youth self-injury and suicide.
Parental involvement is supported through the SOS Parent Portal, which is designed to provide parents with both knowledge and resources. Through the portal, you will find:
Information about warning signs
An example of the screening your student will complete in his/her science class
Several videos about the program, including samples of what students will see and informational videos about how parents can help
Links to resources intended to help you talk to your child about mental health
Educational materials, including evidence-based information about mental health and suicide as well as phone numbers and websites you can visit to receive help
To access the parent portal, please complete this form. You will receive an email with the portal web address, username, and password within 24 hours. If you do not receive the information within 24 hours of completing the form, please contact one of the DMS school counselors.

Vaping Poses Problems for Teens and Their Health
Vaping has become popular among today's youth.
The 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey found that 16 percent of high school kids vape. That means vaping has surpassed cigarette use in teenagers. It’s important to learn the facts about vaping so you can educate your kids about the risks.
With names that make them sound like candy—like mint chocolate and frozen lime drop—many young people are curious to test out these new flavors for themselves.
Vaping includes:
- Volatile organic compounds
- Heavy metals such as nickel, lead, and tin
- Ultrafine particles that could be inhaled deep into the lungs
- Flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical that has been linked to lung disease
