Shumate Family Update
December 6, 2022
Hello Shumate Families,
We’re nearly a week into December, and it’s hard to believe that we’re about to say goodbye to 2022. While January 27th (the end of semester 1) feels like a very long time away, there are only 27 school days left in the semester. For a third of our students, this will be their first experience wrapping up a semester at the secondary level. For these students as well as our 7th and 8th graders, a continued focus on finishing strong will serve them well. Right now is the time to set goals and monitor progress as we work toward a successful end of the first semester!
Important Reminders
As we’re now on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Oxford High School, many metro-Detroit schools are experiencing an uptick in threats made against schools. While many of these are motivated out of an attempt at humor, to get a day off of school, or to cause disruption, it creates real fear in communities and countless hours of work for schools and law enforcement. We’re asking parents to help us communicate this extremely important message using the talking points below:
Joking about violence in schools, towards individuals, or against physical property is not funny and certainly not appropriate.
If you see something that makes you concerned (via social media or any other avenue), sharing this with law enforcement, school administration, or OK2SAY is the appropriate step to take. Sharing with other students or via social media makes you part of the problem.
If you or someone you know is struggling to cope with stressors and experiencing challenges to mental health, say something. We have a dedicated team of individuals here to support our students and have many more resources for those who need more supports beyond what we offer at school.
Please take this opportunity to read the letter (titled Important Reminder) below from our Superintendent, Mrs. Conway.
Middle School AWAY Game League Rules
Students are not permitted to attend away games with a parent.
This is a league-wide policy.
CHS France/Italy 2024
Attention all 8th Grade French Students:
Your student is invited to join us on an upcoming educational travel experience to Paris, the French Riviera and Rome during Spring Break of 2024!
When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and I would love to have your student join me on this adventure.
Come hear all the details, including the itinerary, activities, academic opportunities, cost of this trip, and more at our informational meeting on Wednesday, December 14th at 6:00 PM. The meeting will take place in the Second Floor Media Center at Carlson High School.
Please click here to register for the meeting ASAP – an RSVP is mandatory to attend: https://bit.ly/3VD9Ckv
There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have you attend this meeting to learn more about this exciting opportunity!
*Please note that this trip is pending School Board Approval
Contact Madame Marisa Simone and Ms. Evelyn Cramton if you have any questions.
Let’s Help Fill the Bus
Shumate would like to help Gibraltar Transportation Fill the Bus. We are asking students to donate 5 canned goods or non perishable items to Mrs. Gresham’s classroom (room #112). For every 5 items donated the student will receive a Shumate Pride Ticket. Students can use the Shumate Pride Ticket as a first in line lunch pass or they can put their ticket in a drawing for a prize. We will collect donations November 17th - December 2nd. Together we can ALL help Fill the Bus!!
