Student Profile: Meet Alani Goins
On campus, Alani is very involved. She is an International Baccalaureate (IB) student, a part of Black Student Union, National Honor Society, IB Club, and Volleyball. Her favorite part about attending Fairfax is the diverse community and the opportunity to meet so many people and different personalities. After graduation, Alani plans to attend an out of state university to study psychology on a pre-med track to become a psychoanalyst with a practice of her own. She wants to be involved in studying how the mind works and how people operate. Her dream college is Yale, but she is keeping her options open. She currently has an internship with Dr. Oldschulte, who studied under world-famous psychoanalyst Dr. Anna Freud. During her internship, she has had the rare opportunity to witness private counseling sessions.
As of right now, Alani is a semi-finalist for both the Gates and Coca-Cola Scholarships. She plans to do more research and apply to more scholarships.

Betty Fairfax Boys Basketball Travels to New Mexico
On November 30th, the Stampede basketball team left on an adventurous trip to New Mexico (pictured above). The team participated in the three day “Capital City Basketball Tournament” at Santa Fe High School. Senior Owen Kunes was named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman Vinny Rodriguez scored 23 points in their 55-53 victory versus Espanola Valley High School.
Besides the tournament, one of the trip’s highlights was the opportunity to travel to Albuquerque to the University of New Mexico. At UNM, the team met with one of the university’s coaches and was given a private tour of the basketball facilities. During the tour, the athletes saw the weight room, film room, practice gym, locker room, media/interview room, and went on the basketball floor in the “Pit.”
What a great trip! We hope you had fun and are happy to have you representing Phoenix Union.
