This is what we will accomplish this month in each subject area in Mrs. Seufert’s classroom.
Word Work-We will finish up our study of root words on December 9th. There will NOT be a cumulative test on the roots since there have been so many of them. We will then move on to learn parts of speech. We will start with nouns. We will cover what nouns are, common/proper nouns, and singular/plural nouns. We will do a variety of practice on dry erase boards, paper/pencil, and on laptops. The students will be assessed on each skill that is covered.
Writing- We are continuing our argumentative writing. Our next piece will be a theme-based argumentative piece related to a story or book that the students have read. We are working really hard to use transition words, cite evidence, and then analyze our evidence to show our thinking. The skills that the students are learning for their argumentative pieces will help them tremendously with their reading journals and TDA’s!
Science-We are continuing our study of energy. We have one more topic to cover on how heat changes states of matter. We will have a quiz on this topic on December 2nd. Then, the week of December 5th, we will start a culminating project for our unit on energy. We will not have a test, but rather apply our knowledge to create a digital presentation to show our learning. After our unit on energy is complete, we will begin our next unit on light and sound. We will have a quiz on December 22nd before our break on the types and parts of a wave.
Dear Parents,
We will be learning about exponents, order of operations, inequalities, absolute value and the distributive property in unit 4. Please review the vocabulary below to help prepare your student for the unit. According to the Everyday Mathematics Guide, Unit 4 is where students are introduced to algebraic thinking.
Unit 4 Vocabulary
Absolute value: the distance between a number and 0 on a number line. It is written like this: I 9 I
Algebraic expression: An expression that contains a variable Ex: M - 2
Base: The side of a polygon or face of a polyhedron from which height is measured
Coefficient: The number in a variable term in an expression Ex: 3c + 8; 3 is the coefficient
Distributive Property: This property relates multiplication to a sum or difference of numbers by distributing a factor over the terms in the sum or difference. Ex: 2 * (5 + 3) = (2 * 5) + (2 * 3)= 10 + 6 = 16
Equation: A number sentence that contains an equal sign. Ex: 5 + 10 = 15 and 2L + 2W = P
Exponent: A number used in exponential notation to tell how many times the base is used as a factor.
Expression: A mathematical phrase made up of numbers, variables, operation symbols and /or grouping symbols. An expression DOES NOT contain relation symbols such as =, ≥, ≤
Inequality: A number sentence with a relation symbol other than =, such as ≠, ≤, ≥
Infinite: Unlimited, continuing forever. No matter how many are named, there are always more
Mean absolute deviation (m.a.d.): In a numerical data set, the average distance between individual data values and the mean of those values. It is a measure of how spread out a distribution is.
Nested parentheses: Parentheses within parentheses in an expression.
Open sentence: A number sentence with one or more variables that is neither true nor false. For example, 9 + ____ = 15 and ? – 12 ≤ 8
Relation symbol: A symbol used to express a relationship between two quantities, figures, or sets such as ≥, ‖, ≥
Solution set: The set of all values, or groups of values, that make a number sentence true. For example, the solution set for n + 5 ≥ 12 contains all numbers that are 7 or greater
Substitution: replacing variables with numbers in an expression or formula
Variable: a letter or other symbol that can be replaced by any value from a set of possible values
As we jump into December, your students will have 2 reading journals due between December 5th and December 20th.
We will be wrapping up our key ideas and details unit for both fiction and nonfiction on December 23rd. The last skills we have to work on are fact and opinion, summarizing nonfiction, and making inferences/generalizations. The students will be using a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts to work on these skills. They will be diving into some social studies concepts during our inferring and generalizing lessons.
Please encourage your child to read 15 minutes every night, even the weekends. This helps to build strong fluent readers.
