Something in the Water

Carrie Underwood

The Song of the Family

The Song of the Family is about happiness. At the beginning, Kino describes Juana, Coyotito, and his whole life as wonderful. He didn't need money to make him happy. He said he has a great family, friends, and everything he needed to please him.

I thought the song, "Something in the Water" was a good fit because she talks about changing in the song. You change you family and they change you. They make you stronger and help with all your problems. When she says, "there must have been something in the water", the pearl was in the water. The pearl changed Kino's family and made them stronger in a way.

Song of the Pearl (beginning) Feel this Moment- Pitbull ft. Christina Aguilera

The Song of the Pearl at the beginning of the book is very different from at the ending. When Kino first finds the pearl, everyone is happy. He and Juana are overwhelmed and excited. Juana is excited because Coyotito can finally get treatment from the doctor. But then, things start to change in bad ways. Kino hears the Song of the Pearl basically whenever its mentioned by someone in the town.

One day when the light is glowing I'll be in my castle golden

But until the gates are open I just wanna feel this moment

I chose the song, "Feel this Moment" because it is a very exciting song. The light starts glowing when Kino finds the pearl. The gates are going to open when he sells the pearl. Until that happens, they live in the moment and are mostly excited about their good fortune from the Gods.

Song of the Pearl (end) Blank Space by Taylor Swift

The Song of the Pearl at the end of the book has changed drastically. Whenever Kino looks at the pearl of the world, he sees gray and bad things. He sees his dead son and cannot look at it anymore. Juana and him no longer see the hopes of changing for the better. Kino now knows why Juana was trying to get rid of it the whole time.

Nice to meet you, where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought
Oh my God, look at that face
You look like my next mistake
Love's a game, wanna play?

New money, suit and tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain't it funny, rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let's be friends
I'm dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I can make the bad guys good for a weekend

So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over

Blank Space is the perfect song because the pearl is finally found. The pearl shows many different sides of itself like magic, madness, heaven, and sin. The pearl was like a game and they lost. They lost Coyotito and mostly everybody looks at them differently now. Kino risked everything and lost most of it.

The Song of Evil Wake Me Up by Avicii

The Song of Evil is heard whenever Kino or sometimes Juana hear or sense danger. The few days that they have the pearl, many people try to butter up to Kino. They want him to donate some of his wealth to them once he sells the pearl.

Feeling my way through the darkness

Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans

The song "Wake Me Up" is a great fit for the Song of Evil. Kino and Juana are desperately trying to find a way to change for the better. Juana just wants to throw the pearl back into the ocean to get rid of the evil. Kino is caught up in a dream of his own; picturing what life will be like after he sells the pearl. Juana is trying to carry the weight of their world by trying to convince Kino to get rid of the pearl. Trying to show him that he needs to know what is important in his life.

The Song of the Enemy All of Me by John Legend

Kino hears this song when there is a problem. He also hears it when someone he loves is in danger. The song becomes louder and he hears it more when he finds the pearl.

Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't pin you down
What's going on in that beautiful mind
I'm on your magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright

My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind

'Cause all of me
Loves all of you

The song "All of Me" works very well for the Song of the Enemy. Kino is in a daze and can't seem to be able to get out of it. When somebody tries to steal the pearl, he gets hurt. He's says he going to be alright, but Juana thinks he's crazy. He is putting everything at risk and he doesn't know what he is going to get out of this whole thing.

The Song of the Book I Bet My Life by Imagine Dragons

The whole book is generally sad and depressing. At the beginning, Kino's life is normal and he is very happy. When he finds the pearl, he becomes a greedy person and does not want to sell the pearl for less than 50,000 pesos. He also becomes and animal and takes out his own wife in order to try and stop Juana from throwing the pearl back in the ocean. But then, Kino's life gets out of order and his baby dies. He then realizes that the pearl was only money and that his was is priceless. He could not be replaced.

Kino basically bet his family's lives. He put them in danger because people wanted the pearl all to themselves. Everyone is irritated when he throws it back into the water and never to be found again.
