A message from our principal, Mrs. Fadeji
Dear Penngrove Families,
It's so great to be back! I missed all these little panthers so much! Thank you for welcoming me back to Penngrove and for checking in on the growing Fadeji family. Being back on campus has filled me with such joy as I have witnessed an incredible amount of student growth and learning. You should all be proud of your children. Don't forget to tell them and to celebrate their progress with them!
Over the past couple weeks, we have given quite a few school tours to potential incoming kindergarten families. So far we have received 32 completed registration packets and they keep coming in each day. If you know of anyone who is hoping to secure a spot for kindergarten next year, please encourage them to connect with Mrs. Espino soon! We are also considering a TK for the future so be sure to catch the blurb about that below.
Speaking of Mrs. Espino aka "Mrs. E" to the kids and "Yesenia" to many of you, she has done an outstanding job of opening registration a month earlier than usual, as well as keeping things running smoothly in the office this school year amidst several big transitions. I'd like to thank both Mrs. Espino and Mrs. Gies for their amazing teamwork and dedication to keeping things flowing smoothly for us all! We are fortunate to have the two of you!
As a friendly reminder, in case the holiday craze caused you to fall out of some routines, please please please make sure you get back on the "read with your child(ren) nightly" bandwagon. We encourage all our Penngrove parents to read with your student(s) for at least 20 minutes a night. This is a huge indicator for success and is a special time your children will remember forever. Thank you for investing in their academic success one book at a time!
Be sure to keep an eye on the Penngrove calendar so you don't miss any upcoming events. We have so many fun ways for you to connect with the learning taking place on campus.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Amy

Family Fun Night: MATH GAMES!
Join us for a family fun night put on by the California Math Project! Math concepts don't have to be difficult or complicated, and we have the math games to prove it. These K-6 family-friendly games are easy to replicate at home and would be a great addition to your own family game night, too!

Class Placements for 2018-19
Class placements for the upcoming year are such an exciting time! At Penngrove we do not take teacher requests but we do work extremely hard to make sure each student is in the very best place for his/her learning. We take into account academic levels, social interactions, learning styles, friendships, and any and all other information we can gather to make the best classes possible. We strive to make balanced classrooms full of students who love learning! If you have any extenuating circumstances that may require further assistance, please email Mrs. Fadeji at afadeji@petk12.org and she will assist you.
Happier & Healthier Kids!
Hey parents! Our Penngrove Panthers are starting a health and wellness club called the HAPPY HEALTHY CLUB! Next week, all students are welcome to come and share ideas about how we can make our school a happier, healthier environment. All ideas, all opinions, all perspectives are welcome! If this is something that interests you as a parent, and you would like to support and/or participate in the fun, please email Mrs. Fadeji! Our hope is to have a club made up of students, parents, and staff members all working together for a common goal: happier, healthier kids!
2018 Penngrove Talent Show
It is time to sign up for the 2018 Penngrove Talent Show! For those of you new to Penngrove, our talent show is a great place for students to showcase their talents. Acts can be dancing, singing, playing an instrument, stand-up comedy, skits, or anything your child would like to do!
Please use THIS LINK for all the information and to sign up. Deadline to sign up is February 5. Rehearsals will start February 13.
This year the show will be held at Kenilworth Junior High on Saturday, March 10 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Even if your child is not in the talent show, it is a fun event to attend and see all our Penngrove students perform!

Mindful Cell Phone Usage
If you find that you can’t tear yourself away from your phone at times, or you tell yourself that you’ll only scroll through social media for a few minutes only to look up an hour later wondering where the time went, you’re not alone.
One day last spring, I drove my daughter Macy three hours to Denver for a soccer game. My husband asked me to text him updates during the game, so I told him that I would text him during halftime and again after the game. About 20 minutes into the game, when the score was still 0–0, he texted, “Any score?” Five minutes later, “Has it started yet?” As I began replying to him, the crowd roared. I looked up and asked my friend, “What happened?” She told me that Macy had just scored. “The best goal of the year,” the dad next to her echoed.
The average person checks their cell phone 110 times per day. And they touch it an average of 2,617 times per day.
I was pissed that I missed Macy’s goal, and while I jokingly blamed my husband for me missing the best goal of my daughter’s soccer career, I was the one who had picked up my phone to read and respond to his texts.
Cell phone addiction is real. In fact, 40% of the population reports being addicted to their phones. And Americans spend an average of five hours a day browsing. Five hours! Imagine what you could do with all that time.
That’s why there is the 5-Day Digital Detox. It’s a quick-and-easy way for you to use your devices more mindfully. Instead of succumbing to the craving to pick up your phone and check whatever app might be pinging your attention, you’ll learn how to be intentional with your phone, so you can re-engage with people and experiences in real life.
It’s free. It’s simple. And you don’t have to give up your phone. For more information, check us out HERE.
Mentor Me Update
Hello Penngrove parents! Happy New Year and welcome back. The Mentor Me program on our campus continues to grow and to support more of our students. We now have 24 active Mentorships meeting on campus! This means that 24 of our students are getting that one on one support that they need. This is wonderful news, however, we have 10 students on our waitlist. 10, wonderful, bright, amazing Penngrove students who need another adult in their life. A friend that can help them through the difficult times in their life!
Did you know that young adults who are at risk for falling off track but who have a Mentor are:
- 55% more likely to go to college
- 52% less likely that their peers to skip a day of school
- 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs
- Children who have Mentors are less likely to become depressed
- Mentoring promotes positive social attitudes and relationships
- Mentored youths tend to trust their parents more and communicate better with them
These are just a few of the amazing things Mentoring can do for our students. One hour a week is all it takes to become a Mentor! Maybe your schedule is just too busy to squeeze it in - what about a retired neighbor or a grandparent or a niece or nephew? Someone with a little more time on their hands. Think about the amazing things that can happen in one hour a week.
Our Mentor Me room is right across from the office - feel free to stop by and take a look. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions Sarah Keiser 707-332-5969 skeiser@wrmm.org

Achieve Your Health Goals in the New Year!
With the start of the New Year comes new resolutions. Millions of Americans are setting goals to eat better and live a healthier life, but few stick with their plan. Start your year right and achieve your goals by making small, manageable changes and celebrating your successes!
Here are some tips to get you started:
- Track your food choices and physical activity. Logging and tracking help you examine your lifestyle habits and determine areas for improvement.
- Keep a one week record of your food intake and exercise. Start where you are to make small changes.
- Start small, get SMART (goals). Too large of goals can leave you discouraged. Make small, realistic goals that can fit into your daily routine. Follow the formula for a S.M.A.R.T. goal when getting started: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely.
- Ex. Eat an orange instead of drinking 8 oz. orange juice (a savings of 60-100 calories and the addition of fiber to the diet).
- Ex. Walk 15 minutes 3x/week.
- Make sure you can count your success. Your goals should include measures that can help track your progress. If your goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables, how much are you aiming for each day? Set a timeline that is realistic to meet a goal and evaluate your progress every couple of weeks.
- Ex. Include one vegetable with dinner 3x/week as a start.
- Contact a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist to help you succeed. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) can help you make a realistic plan to achieve your health goals and provide support along the way.
For more information and to locate an RDN near you, visit EatRight.org .
