Social Studies Weekly
Year 7 Volume 6 ~ September 30, 2019
The 6 Week Benchmark window opens October 7th. Please make sure students take both the multiple-choice and constructed response portions of the benchmark. While the NC Final no longer has CRs, our students still need to know how to communicate their understanding in written form.

There is some connection between labor issues and the Great Migration. With more African Americans moving north, there was increased animosity among workers due to the arrival of the southern migrants. The complexity of the economic and cultural turbulence of this period is often overlooked. The rise of white supremacy, spurred on by the film Birth of a Nation" and Great Migration, in conjunction with the hope for increased equality as a result of the work of the NAACP and African American participation in fighting during WWI, created a powder keg situation. This led to a period known as Red Summer when thousands of African Americans were massacred under the nomenclature of "race riots". But, most of these were just massacres. The massacre in Elaine, Arkansas led to a Supreme Court decision related to due process.
Message from Melissa
Happy Last Day of September!!
Thursday and Friday of last week, I worked with DPI on some standard revision. There are a few things I can tell you, a lot of things I simply do not know, and a few things I can't share with you.
First, American 1 and 2 will be back to just and single United States history course. The course is basically from 1776 on.
Second, there was an overwhelming desire by the standard revision writers (K-12) to try to make the non-American courses, like World History, a little less Euro-centric.
Third, the new standards and courses (WH, Government, and US) will go into effect starting the 21-22 school year. They will most likely, depending on the district, not all roll out all in one year but will most likely be staggard.
Fourth, the new Economics/PFL course rolls out next school year (20-21). But, this does not mean it will be offered in our district next school year. That will depend, I am guessing, on sequencing.
Fifth, if you are interested in teaching the new Economics/PFL course you need to be trained or registered for the training. I will provide more details when I have them.
Sixth, once the first draft of the revised standards is complete, they will be available for review by the public for 30 days. This should happen sometime in the middle of December if all things go as planned.
Essentially, you have all the information I have related to high school that I can share. The information I cannot share is related to what is in the standards. And, aside from the course, I am working on, I don't have any idea of the content of those new standards. But, you will be able to look at that during the public review period.
I hope you have a great week.
Melissa
