Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Evening Mayfield!

Happy New Year to our wonderful community here at Mayfield Intermediate School. I hope that everyone enjoyed the extended winter break. It was a great week transitioning back into the routine of going to school. Our students and staff did a phenomenal job getting back to work and picking up where we left off. I'm incredibly proud of everyone's effort.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 17, 2022. This day is considered to be a day of service. People can help and serve our community in many ways on Monday and throughout the year. I hope that people take this day to reflect and think about ways to help serve our amazing Manassas City community. Please enjoy the three-day weekend.

Always Learning

Upcoming Assessment Schedule for Students

January will be a busy month for students and teachers as we work to complete CAM assessments in science, math, and language arts. The CAM assessments are formative assessments that students will take, and teachers will gain valuable information regarding how well students are learning the new concepts being taught.

  • Purpose of the CAM Assessment: cumulative checkpoints throughout the year on content acquisition, helps the teacher see an overview of instruction/success of instruction/remaining challenge points for the class as a whole, allows us to monitor the alignment of curriculum, gives us a division-wide look at where we are, etc.

To minimize the disruption to the regular schedule, we will adjust our daily schedule for the following 4 Wednesdays. Students will stay in their homeroom classes from 7:15 AM to 9:25 AM. and complete the exam. Once the test is complete, we will return to our regular schedule.

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winner and Participants

This past week Manassas City Public Schools hosted the city-wide spelling Bee competition. Elementary students from all 5 elementary schools participated in the spelling bee Wednesday night in the Osbourn High School auditorium. Intermediate school and Metz Middle School students participated in the spelling bee Thursday night in the Mayfield Intermediate School commons.

I'm proud and excited to share that the grades 5-8 winner came from Mayfield Intermediate School! The winner was Navjot Kaur from Mr. Megenhardt's 5th grade homeroom. Congratulations to Navjot. She will be moving on to the county-wide spelling bee and she will compete against students from schools throughout Prince William County.

Boys Basketball and Wrestling Tryouts at Metz.

6th Grade students have the opportunity to try out and participate in the middle school sports program at Metz Middle School. We just concluded the Girls Basketball season, and we had five outstanding student-athletes from Mayfield Intermediate School be members of the Metz Middle School Basketball team. This is a great way to help students become involved in our school community, and it also helps support students with the upcoming transition to Metz.

Anyone engaging in trying out for the boy's basketball team or the wrestling team needs to make sure that they have an up-to-date sports physical to participate. Please visit your health care provider if you haven't had a sports physical within the past six months. Additionally, anyone interested in trying out will have transportation to Metz Middle School provided. The student simply needs to ride their regular bus and stay on the bus as it travels to Metz after unloading all Mayfield students. Once the students arrive at Metz, they can report to the auditorium area of the school. I will be there to help support students as they come.

Thank You for Principal Appreciation Week

I want to take a moment and thank everyone for the appreciation shared with me this past week as the state of Virginia celebrated Principal Appreciation Week. I'm always saying that I feel very fortunate to serve as Mayfield Intermediate School's principal. Our school is blessed with great students, a fantastic community, and outstanding teachers. I can't wait to help Mayfield Intermediate School continue growing and supporting our students for the years to come.

I also want to take this moment to show appreciation for our assistant principals at Mayfield Intermediate School. Our administrative team works so well together and can meet the needs of our students, parents, and teachers. I couldn't imagine doing this job without the support and creative thinking of Mr. Moore and Mrs. Huntley. We love working with each other, and we are excited to support Mayfield.

If you see Mr. Moore or Mrs. Huntley, please tell them "thank you" for all they do for our school!
