CHARACTER CORNER
An honorable person tells the truth and acts justly.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
ACAP Testing Completed
I had the opportunity to observe today's 8th grade Science assessment. Our students continue to amaze me. The students I observed worked diligently and were respectful of their peers as they finished up at later times. Thank you to the students, teachers and parents for recognizing how important this accountability measure is for Bumpus.
Reminders Regarding COVID-19 Safety Guidance.
As this school year comes to a close, we must continue adhering to safety guidelines to lessen the spread of COVID-19. Our students, employees, and families' collective efforts have helped get us back to five days of in-person instruction. Now is not the time to let our guard down.
Please continue to promote social distancing and proper hygiene practices such as hand washing and sanitizing, proper use of face masks (covering mouth and nose), and staying away from others when you are sick.
The CDC states that students attending in-person instruction may only need 3 feet of social distancing, rather than 6 feet, as long as proper universal masking is maintained. Despite this recent change, the 6/15 rule has not changed. Anyone within 6 feet of a COVID positive person for 15 minutes or more (mask or no mask) must still quarantine as a close contact according to the current guidelines unless they meet specific quarantine exemption criteria. The CDC's new guidance, released 3/19/21, recommends 3 feet of separation between students at elementary, middle, and high schools in communities with low, moderate, or substantial transmission. But the agency says middle school and high school students should stay 6 feet apart in communities where test positivity rates are 10 percent or higher and where co-horting (when groups of students are kept together with the same staff throughout the day) is not available. The CDC also continues to recommend 6 foot distancing between adults in the building and between adults and students.
Please continue to remind parents to keep their student(s) at home if they are showing any signs of illness. This would significantly decrease the incidence of close contact quarantines required at school.
Masks at School
Although the COVID-19 positive cases throughout the school district have decreased, we still have new cases being reported daily. In addition, some employees who desire to receive the vaccines have not yet been fully vaccinated. Thus, we will continue to follow CDC recommendations and require masks and facial coverings inside our school buildings and on school buses for the remainder of this school year. As a reminder, masks and facial coverings are not required outdoors if social distancing can be attained.
Spring Awards Day
We will host a face-to-face Spring Awards Day in May for students only. It will be live streamed. All virtual students are invited to attend. Social distancing will be practiced during each grade level ceremony. Our custodial team will be disinfecting between ceremonies. More details to come.

RESIDENTIAL LEASES
DAILY ATTENDANCE - MRS. PHILLIPS
Please email Mrs. Phillips at aphillips@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268.
A parent/doctor note is still required within three (3) days of returning in order to excuse an absence or check-in/out and can be emailed to Mrs. Phillips or dropped in the excuse boxes in the main lobby or throughout the school. Please include the student’s full name on the parent note. ***Quarantine related absences MUST be cleared with Nurse Schmith at x2230 or mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us.
ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school for such events as family events, trips, dance recitals, travel sports, etc., it is necessary for them to complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in within 3 days of the absence, so that the absence may be excused. This form is available on the Bumpus Middle School website, or in the 2nd floor office.
There is a section on the form to be completed, with the reason for the absence, and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the 2nd Floor Office for administrator approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. After the signature is obtained, Mrs. Phillips in the 2nd office will enter the absence into INow. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence and the form emailed to Mrs. Phillips).
