One thing I keep hearing and seeing is that we are in uncharted territory as we work through trying to continue life during a pandemic. We may be, as many of us have never lived through something like this before. In a recent phone call to check-in, my grandparents told me stories that were passed down from their parents of surviving plagues and sickness as it spread all over the area before medicine was what it is today. I found this article on WCPO about how the Spanish Flu ravished this area in 1918. Schools and businesses closed. One interesting thing to point out is that liquor stores today, and saloons in 1918, are both open during the pandemic. :)
We are living in a time that people will write about, study and reference. As we work through each day, it's important to remember that everyone has different situations that have been a result of this pandemic and everyone is responding to those situations differently. Some of our staff have family members who have lost jobs or are about to lose their jobs, are dealing with sickness, are taking care of elderly family members, have little kids who are suddenly in their "classrooms" and "offices" all day and NEED them (Mom? Mom? Hey Mom? Mom? Mommy? Mama...am I right?) , are worried about 401Ks and financial strain on themselves or family members, are constantly wiping and washing and scrubbing.
We feel blessed to be able to do our jobs from home. We are the lucky ones. And we WILL do our job and continue to be professional as we do it. Most of us are educators because we believe education is the difference maker in this world and its people.
This virtual classroom is our conference room, our courtroom, our examination table, our sales counter, our stock room, our back kitchen, our cubicle. Our profession is to teach. And we will continue to do our BEST to do this for your child. Because that is what we do; that is who we are as professionals.
We will get better and better at this virtual teaching and learning thing, but we won't lower our expectations. We will be flexible and encouraging. We have many ways we can provide extra support to those who need it.
We know that this is a stressful time for our school community including our own staff and our families and students. We won't lower our standards, but we will do everything we can to support the mental health of our students and families. As we continue to do our best, all we can ask is that you continue to do yours. When you feel overwhelmed, just remember that if you do your best, than that is good enough. If that means walking away from an assignment that is due soon to avoid frustration and tears, walk away. Come back to it later. We all want the kids to continue to learn and grow through this period, but we also want them to come out of this stronger not just academically but socially and emotionally as well.
Our counselors are available to support your families. Join Mrs. Hook's happy and healthy hangout to incorporate some calming strategies to help us persevere through those real moments where your toddler is screaming, your 4 year old is about to pull the boiling water off the stove, you are on a work call and your 7 year-old just turned on the audio because it is their turn to talk on the second grade Google Hangout.
We can do this together. Just don't give up.
We promise we won't.

How do I join my child's Google Classroom?
Your child should have received an invite to join a Google Classroom. For special areas and counselors, they may also have received a code to join. Here is a video that explains how to join a Google Classroom!
Google Hangouts
Digital Citizenship is much like our MUSTANG PRIDE we practice in the classrooms and hallways of our school. The Google Classroom and Google Hangout is an extension of our classroom. WE must be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe online. One thing we are seeing is that students are using the chat box during inappropriately during the lesson, which is distracting other students, and the teacher, from the learning that is taking place. Students should only use the chat box during a lesson as directed by the teacher. This means a student would typically use the chat box to ask a question or make a comment about the lesson/learning. If a student is choosing not to be respectful, responsible and safe online during a Google Hangout and is becoming a barrier to the learning of others, he/she may be removed from the chat and then contacted by the teacher or an administrator as a follow up to discuss. This is an instructional day, and we are expecting all of our students to show integrity.

Parents/guardians,
We understand that the Non-Traditional Instructional (NTI) days are new and different. New and different can be exciting, but it can also lead to frustration and/or worry. Your students may experience feelings of sadness over missing their friends and teachers. They may experience worry about getting their school work completed or having a new routine and schedule. If your child experiences any of these feelings it is important to let them express themselves without judgment. Let them know that their feelings are normal and ok. Sometimes just listening is the best thing we can do. Attached is a one sheet guide on handling worry. You can gently remind the kids to use some of the strategies that we have learned at school that are outlined in this handout.Struggling with talking with your Mustang about their emotions regarding the world events? This resource will help you navigate those emotions and build a closer relationship with your child.

A Message from Nurse Aimee
I hope everyone is staying healthy and washing their hands. If I can help you in anyway or if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at aimee.lind@boone.kyschools.us.
Here are some links with some good information. The youtube video is a good one and answers a lot of questions that our kids might be asking. Try staying off social media, it is overwhelming and not always the most up to date and accurate information.
