Bring your #1 CRV, aluminum cans, CRV Glass and household batteries to drop off. Count the number of CRV items and jot it down on a slip of paper to drop off. Please don't tape it to the bag, it will most likely be buried and not seen. This is for the end of the school year tally for prizes for the top students. It helps us out if you can sort and crush your items, or at least not have the caps on the bottles and keep glass separate. All the money redeemed for your items goes directly to the school. Come out and help sort and crush too, kids welcome. Contact Victor at pvesdads1@gmail.com if you have questions. Thank you!

Adopt-a-Family
Hello Park Village Families,
In the spirit of the holiday season, Park Village Elementary is continuing its annual tradition in supporting the PUSD Adopt-a-Family program. PV has ”adopted” six families from our community. This wonderful program helps over 500 families that are in need within our school district. We have an incredible opportunity to touch the lives of those in our area who may be having a difficult time. Below are the links to the Signup Genius for each grade level along with the teachers’ names.
Please bring in all unwrapped gifts to the Adopt-a-Family donation boxes located in each grade level mall and give all gift cards to your child’s teacher by Thursday, December 5th, 2019 ⛄
The Park Village community has a long history of blessing families through this charitable program, but we cannot do it without the amazing generosity and support of our PV families!
Please help us bring joy and the spirit of giving this holiday season.
Thank you again for your generosity!

Penguin Page Turners Book Club ~ Recommendation of the Week
The book recommended by Lyla J. of Mrs. Marker's class is The Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein
Twelve kids are selected for an overnight experience at their new public library, a library designed by the famous game maker, Luigi Lemoncello. Little do they know, this is actually a set-up for the time of their lives. When the overnight is over, they find themselves locked-in. Their only hope is to figure out the clues and piece together the puzzles in order to win the ultimate prize. Another book for those of you who enjoy puzzles. Recommended for grades 3 - 7. Check this and the sequels from the library today!
Science Field Day is Back!
Our PV Science Field Day team did an amazing job again last year and we are excited to have another group of kids enjoy a day all about science challenges and fun events this year!
The Science Field Day competition will be held in Lakeside on Saturday, May 16th, and involves 50+ teams of 4th and 5th graders from all over the county. Details can be found at http://www.sdcoe.net/lls/ccr/Pages/elementary-science-field-day.aspx. Interested students/parents should review both this link and the PV Science Field Day Application. Most participants will be placed in two events. All PV team members must be able to meet and work outside of school for 2-4 hours per week from February through May and their parents will be required to coach one of the events in which their child is participating. We have many resources and supplies to support the coaches, so don’t let that requirement deter you from participating! While student preference is considered, event assignments must first maximize overall participation and minimize scheduling conflicts. If there are more applications than space available, alternates will be designated and a wait-list formed.
Questions? Please contact Erin Zamora (erin.zamora@gmail.com)
Applications and permission slips for the PV Science Field Day team are due by Wednesday, December 11th at 3:20 PM (both forms need to be printed, filled out and turned into office by 12/11 at 3:20 pm). Late forms will not be accepted! Application and permission slip are provided below.
Counselor’s Corner

Chapter 4: Why Is It Important for Children to Understand How the Brain Works?
Understanding how the brain works gives them power and control over their learning. Humans have approximately 100 billion brain cells, called neurons. When neurons connect, a synapse occurs. These connections are strengthened with practice and effort. Every time new learning is practiced and applied, the thin connection becomes stronger and stronger until the learning is mastered.
Neuroplasticity describes the flexibility and changeability of the brain. Over time changes in the brain take place through new learning, focused practice and deliberate effort.
“Increase of motivation, willingness to accept new challenges, and healthier
reaction to failure are only a few of the benefits children will
experience when they understand how their brain work.”
Why is brain science important to children? They need a working knowledge of the most sophisticated organ in their bodies. Increase of motivation, willingness to accept new challenges, and healthier reaction to failure are only a few of the benefits children will experience to be able to visualize neurons connecting when they are learning new skills. We want them to be able to visualize neurons connecting when they are learning new skills. Even more interesting, research shows that children’s focus on the ability of their brains to grow and change (neuroplasticity) was a significant influence on their mindset, and ultimately, their motivation. When children hear and are able to use the words brain, neuron, and connection they begin to show ownership over a part of their bodies that is otherwise fairly mysterious.
Some children’s books about the brain include:
Your Fantastic Elastic Brain by JoAnn Deak
Bubble Gum Brain by Julia Cook
Making A Splash by Carol E. Reiley
My wish for your children is that they all become life long learners.

**REMINDERS**
Parking Lot Reminder
Please remember that the parking lot is for teachers and staff only, with the exception of the clearly marked visitor spots. We have many support staff members whose hours begin after class is in session. When they have to spend their time searching for parking off campus, it negatively impacts our student services. Thank you for your help!
Volunteer Opportunities for 2019 - 2020
Park Village prides itself on our programs and events. However, they are all run by parent volunteers, and we need your help! We have opportunities of all types and sizes. Even one hour once a month can make a difference!
- Library - Help reshelve books. This task is constant and can happen any time of day. Perhaps you can help after morning drop-off or while waiting to pick up your child in the afternoon? You can make a difference in as little as 15-20 minutes. I just need folks to stop by regularly. Many hands make light work! No experience is required. If you’re interested, please email me at sfleming@powayusd.com, or stop by the library to chat.
- Recycling - Help sort and crush recycling. Second Wednesday of every month, 8-9 am, ESS Parking Lot. Even 15-30 minutes before school is a big help!. Contact Victor at pvesdads1@gmail.com.
- Science Night Volunteers - You will oversee a station while our little ones sharpen their science skills with their parents. Please sign up for a night when your own child is not attending - PV Science Night Volunteers. Contact Shannon Nellies at s.nellies72@gmail.com.
- Marquee Editor in Chief(s) - Update the marquee in the front of the school with our PVE news, and help keep our families informed! Contact Gigi in the office.
