Message from AUGS

Hello AUGS Students and Families,

This addition of the AUGS newsletter includes celebrations highlighting student work, social emotional support for students and families, the virtual pumpkin decorating contest, Red Ribbon Week, and other updates from the district.

Remote Planning Day

On November 2, Antioch CCSD 34 will take its third of five Remote Learning Planning Days. On this day, staff will be developing, collaborating, and planning; therefore, there will be no new work assigned to students. Families and students may take the day to complete outstanding assignments, review previous activities, or unplug from the screen for the day. The timing of this day is in conjunction with the conclusion of the first trimester and is an opportunity for our team to reflect, prepare, and transition to the next trimester. Our staff will be meeting in teams, completing report cards, preparing for conferences, participating in professional development, and planning for continued instruction. Important note: Tuesday, November 3 is also a state-wide non-attendance day due to Election Day.

As a reminder, trimester 1 ends on Friday, October 30th and trimester 2 classes start Monday, November 2nd (classes officially start November 4th).

Message from Dr. Hubbard regarding remote learning on October 26, 2020.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Joe Koeune

Principal - AUGS

Celebrations

6th Grade SPED Team School Store

Over the last few years, the 6th grade special education team has been running a school “store” where students can use tickets that they’ve earned to buy items ranging from small fidgets to board games. The tickets we use are made just for our students and it’s been incredible to watch unmotivated students suddenly turn things around to buy a present for a family member during the holidays, or to watch a student read their first book for pleasure to get some extra tickets towards a football they’ve been eyeing. Motivation can be hard to come by with remote learning, but thanks to the hard work of our team and the help of one of our wonderful paraprofessionals, Julie Vermeyen, we were able to revive the school store! Our first round of the school store ended just before parent pick-up. For the past month, students have been earning points and we have tracked them on a spreadsheet. We set up the school store in one of our rooms and took photos of all of the prizes and posted them with “prices” for students to peruse. On a Thursday during office hours, students were able to hop on Mrs. Sammons’ zoom link to place their bids. It was so exciting to see student smiles and excitement as they bought their prizes that they earned. In the classroom, we’ve enjoyed seeing increased motivation and pride in student work. It’s been a great way for us teachers to tangibly show them that we are proud. We can’t wait for the next school store to be open for business!

This year, we are not able to be together, but we are no less grateful for their service. So we are going to do our best to create a virtual way of sharing our thanks to our Veterans for their service. Please provide us with information below if you know of a Veteran that we can celebrate. If you have more than one Veteran, please fill out this form for each one. The deadline is NOVEMBER 1. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Strathman at kstrathman@antioch34.com.

Handbook Update

The Head Lice section in the 2020-2021 Family Handbook has been updated to reflect current practice as shown on the Health Services webpage. The policies reflected on the Health Services webpage and now the updated 2020-2021 Family Handbook have been in place for several years. We apologize for not catching the outdated information in the handbook prior to its release. You can view the 2020-2021 Family Handbook by clicking here.

Respiratory Medications in School During Pandemic

The current guidelines for schools advise the use of spacers with inhalers and to avoid the use of nebulized medications. Additionally, students who are self-carrying their inhalers will need to go to the health office to use their inhaler in order to prevent the potential spread of infectious disease. In an emergency situation students are encouraged to use their self-carry inhaler and then report to the nurses office. Please see our Use of Respiratory Medications During Pandemic guidance for additional details. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s health office.

Submit your child's medical records

This year, District 34 is requiring that the State of Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination and all Immunizations required by the State of Illinois must be received before October 15th in order for your student to avoid exclusion. This paperwork is required for all sixth grade and new students to the district. Students will not be allowed in the building if their health files are not updated.

Note: Scheduled medical appointments are NOT acceptable in lieu of the required physical examination documentation.

Please contact your child’s school health office with any questions at 847-838-8301.
