Learning Connections: From Indianapolis to Michigan to California to Fishers?
Have you ever gone down a social media rabbit hole, ended up somewhere unexpected, but then found it was even better than you could have dreamed? And then the rabbit hole ends up close to home? (Versus other times: hours later, where did the time go, I have nothing done, how did I get here, where was I going?)
First I saw Chris Woods (@dailystem) on "The Today Show." A teacher in the UP, he was on to share science experiments students could do with everyday materials at home. (He also has the "Stem Everyday Podcast). His twitter stream is amazing, filled with his great ideas and authentic STEM activities others share. He retweeted an interesting photo by Traci Jackson from California who posted this with #mathwalk. I noticed that it had been retweeted over 1000 times, so I followed her too.
Eventually, I saw that she had created and posted a lot of photos with #mathwalk, and other teachers were joining in. This led me to a #mathwalk by Allison Strole who teaches math and honors algebra at Fishers Jr High and lives less than 5 miles from me. (Another great person to follow!) In a relatively short arc, I was connected to three outstanding, creative educators who live thousands of miles apart. It's representative of the work you are all doing, finding innovative ways to connect with students while sharing your expertise. I was curious about the origins of #mathwalk, so I contacted @TraciTeacher and she shared this journal entry with me. Now, in less than a month, Math Walks even has its own Facebook page with 168 followers and a google site
