The Bear Necessities
James L. Collins Catholic School
From the Desk of Mrs. Hoyer
This week we wrapped up our study on the third beatitude, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” We learned a lot from Douglas Speaks videos which taught the children the meaning of the word “meek” and why it’s important to put others ahead of yourself. Next week we’ll begin the discover the meaning of the fourth beatitude, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
On Veterans Day tomorrow, we will honor those soldiers who have served as well as those currently serving in any of the branches of the US military service during the school Mass in the morning. Students will sing patriotic songs and all veterans will be invited for a brief reception after the service. Thank you to PTC for helping to make this a special event for our soldiers!
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the students at JLCCS have been making thank you cards in English and Spanish to distribute to parishioners of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The parishioners at ICCC support us in some many ways, it seemed fitting to express our gratitude to them during this season. If you and/or your child would like to help distribute these cards after Mass on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st, please email Christina Cozart at ccozart@collinscatholicschool.org . He/she will need to wear the Mass day school uniform and meet Mrs. Cozart, Mrs. Hoyer, or Mrs. Anguiano at the back of the church after Communion.
Following several conversations with students in grades 3 and up, I feel it is important to share with you Fr. Juan Carlos Marín Cortés’ message which appeared in the bulletin this past weekend.
“The grace and peace of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. As I mentioned in my homily last week, I am concerned about the use of cellphones and tablets by our children and youth. St. Paul says, “‘All things are lawful for me,’ but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful for me,’ but I will not be dominated by anything” (1 Co 6: 12). There are some apps and websites that are beneficial. For example, Formed.org offers excellent content for adults, youth, and children to learn more about our faith. However, the attachment to the cellphone and the tablet will create difficulties for anybody, especially the little ones. Parents need to be very careful and monitor the use of technology by their children because of the many threats that exist and the addiction that it can create. The visions of the apostle St. John and the prophet Ezekiel of the Seraphines close to God depict them covered with eyes around their bodies (Ez 10: 12; Rev 4: 6). All of us must be like that with our children and youth so that we can watch and protect them. The dangers of the excessive use of technology would hinder them from relating to other people. The Holy Spirit gives us communion, which is fostered when we interact, especially in person. Creating moments and opportunities to interact in person, such as playing, talking, praying, eating, and doing sports require effort. Still, it is worthwhile to do it so that children and youth can enjoy communion with their parents.”

For those who are interested in their child(ren) receiving the vaccine, below is a link provided by the diocese that you can utilize to make an appointment almost immediately if you are willing to drive to Dallas. They are taking reservations now all across the city of Dallas. If you choose to participate, you are encouraged to submit your child's vaccine information to the school. https://dallas-county.quickscreen.health/dallas-co#/screening
