CAN VALERIE FIND PEACE?
Summary
Valerie Leftman who is the main character in Hate List, survives a shooting at her school Garvin High. Her boyfriend Nick Levil started the shooting on the morning of May 2nd, 2008 near the end of his and Valerie's junior year. The shooting left six students and one teacher killed and multiple people wounded including Valerie herself. "They don't blame you' she said 'They want you to know that." Before the shooting Nick and Valerie created the 'Hate List' in her notebook. The 'List' was filled with peoples names that annoyed and tormented Nick and Valerie because they're outcasts. One name on their 'List' is Jessica Campbell who was one of the many people who tormented Valerie and Nick but mostly Valerie. Surprisingly, Valerie unintentionally saves Jessica's life, but Valerie ends up getting shot by Nick. The book flashes back and forth between the day of the shooting and Valerie's senior year in highschool. While it flashes back and forth Valerie is struggling with school and trying to find peace without Nick. Valerie quotes "I didn't mean for anyone to die."
Assessment
I chose this book because the cover of the book instantly caught my eye and I got interested in the book. My favorite part of the book occurred when the graduation ceremony at the end was held because it was a happy ending that tied up all the conflict that was in the book. In my opinion the book was captivating because of all the drama and conflict in the story just kept me reading and wanting to read more of it. I didn't have anything I disliked about the book but what I liked about the book was the drama and conflict. I also liked the love story behind Valerie and Nick even though Nick was now dead.
Overall
Overall I thought Hate list was a phenomenal book the whole book is mainly telling you about Valerie's struggle in life which is something I thought was great to use in a book and I haven't seen many books use something like that. I gave Hate List a 5/5 stars and would recommend it to teenagers in highschool in grades 9th-12th.
