Taft Timberwolf Book Club
On January 14, Taft Elementary School hosted its first book club. Thirteen 4th and 5th grade students are participating in this after school activity running once a week through Thursday, February 18th.
The Taft Timberwolf Book Club is reading Fish in a Tree by Linda Mullaly Hunt. Students met in small and large groups to share their thoughts about the challenges facing the main character, Ally Nickerson, make connections to other characters in the book and discuss “I Wonder” questions. Students were provided a small notebook to keep track of their predictions, questions, quotes, drawings, etc. — whatever they choose to include.
This “just for fun” book club is being organized and supervised by Mrs. Bonikowske (Literacy Coach) and Miss Pritzl (Library Media Specialist). Our goal is for students to have a “safe” environment in which they feel comfortable to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions without hesitation as they read this “Global Read Aloud” book. In future meetings students will be encouraged take more responsibility in leading small and large group discussions.
