Principal's Corner

March is a very busy month with all the events coming up around the districts, but it’s also a time of year to remember the importance of reading. Reading at home with your child, or listening to your child read to you is a great way to keep them growing as readers. I have attached a flier with tips to use while reading at home with your child.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for March 16 and March 18. Please connect with your child’s teacher to schedule a time for a ZOOM meeting.

Physical Education Matters

Steeby has been busy raising donations for Kids Heart Challenge and we are currently over $14,000 at Baker/Steeby combined! This money goes towards the American Heart Association and a sponsor (US Games) sends our school district some money to spend on new PE equipment! The more we raise, the more we get back for our PE program!

We recently learned a fun throwing game called Bombardment and a speed/strategy game called Kunkin which is similar to Steal the Bacon but with teams. Next up will be our jump rope unit where students can earn Kids Heart prizes for winning challenges and then volleyball!

Some of our recent Athlete of the week winners are Nolan Kopenski, Gabbie Johnston, and Brayden Miner.

A Note About Music

Greetings from music! This past month has been filled with lots of fun in the music room. The second graders have been practicing their solfege (do, mi, so & la) and have been having fun moving to Heel and Toe Polka and Highway #1. They have also learned about two jazz musicians - Melba Liston and Trombone Shorty - both trombone players. They have played boomwhackers and learned Valentine's songs. We ended the month learning some Australian songs and learning a new music note.

During the month of February the 3rd graders played instruments and used body percussion to the book Mama Will It Snow Tonight? They also learned songs for Valentine's Day - Big Bunch of Roses and Bump Up Tomato. The third graders learned about the musician Teresa Carreno and how she played her piano for President Lincoln. We ended the month learning about syncopation and ostinatos with the songs Syncopated Cyril and Mr. Ram Goat-O.

Media Moments

Happy Reading Month from media class!

We are all back together! Students have enjoyed reading all the books for March Madness. Students will vote on which book was their favorite in a basketball type bracket- but with books. I can't wait to find out which book was their favorite at the end of March.

We have also been focusing on digital citizenship and being safe on the Internet. Second graders have been learning about digital citizenship from Ruff Ruffman on PBS Kids. Third graders have been learning about digital citizenship by visiting the Cyber Surf Island website. Both websites can be found on Information Place:

In March we are going to be focusing on our favorite books and also text features that can be found in Informational books. Make sure to check out all the fun dress up days and ways to read on the March Reading Month calendar.

Here are the Google Classroom codes for media class.

2nd grade: rvofgnh

3rd grade: bwup6px

If you would like to schedule a conference with Mrs. Barnes for media send an email to

Parent Drop Off/Pick Up

For those who drop off their student in the morning and/or pick them up in the afternoon you will notice new signs in the area instructing you to pull ahead to a certain spot. By doing so it allows us to load 4 cars at a time and reduce the amount of time spent in line waiting. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

A Child's Perspective

This month's question was:

"What is something you are not allowed to do that you wish you could do?"

"Go to friends' houses whenever." - Makalynn, 2nd grade

"Be the Governor so Corona can end." - Charlotte, 2nd grade

"Be President." - Harrison, 2nd grade

"Say 'I love you' to someone who is being nice to me." - Ryan, 3rd grade

"Driving the snowmobile all day." - Maddox, 3rd grade

"See my friends every day." - Maya, 3rd grade
