It began to form 1.3 million years ago and now stands 12,448 ft above sea level.
Hot soils of Erebus are dotted around it's summit called Tramway Ridge, heat from the volcano melts the ice creating hot patches of moist soil where mosses and microbes are located
During 1970's the lava lake at Erebus produced occasional Strombolian explosions
Activity increased between September 1984 and January 1985, several large explosions were recorded and there were reports of mushroom-shaped clouds rising as much as 2 km above the summit
largest eruptions were during 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000
